New machine recommendation moving from Resmed S9 Elite

Post by Guest » Mon Oct 31, 2016 6:44 pm

I'm a happy user of Resmed S9 elite. In addition to nightly use at home, I've been able to camp with it by leaving the humidifier at home and connecting to a LiFEPo 12V battery via the DC-DC converter. Its time to upgrade to a machine and I was saddened to see that the S9 is no longer available and the Airsense 10 appears to be a "step backward" (at least for someone like me who camps a lot) in at least two areas and I am wondering if I'm just overlooking something (its rare that companies remove nice features in products): (1) size. the S9 CPAP without humidifer appears to be about 1/2 the size of the Airsense 10 (since I can't remove the humidifier). (2) power. with my S9, I could get about 16 hours (2 night) of use from a single charge of my battery. The Airsense 10 appears to consume about 4 times the power since I can't seem to disable the humidifier (at least looking at the user guide, there doesn't appear to be any provisions for this). (3) wifi reporting. I have seen a few posts where users claim that they keep getting "harassed with popups" on the machine if they aren't connected to wifi. Is this accurate?

Since the Airsense 10 doesn't appear to be a good fit for my situation, I am wondering if users might have recommendations of other units that might be a good alternative to some who liked the S9

Thanks for your suggestions

You might look at the Respironics DreamStation Pro...it's the Respironics equivalent to the S 9 Elite in the newer line.
It has a removable humidifier and will run off DC battery direct without the need for a converter. Respironics is the one we most often recommend for people who do a lot of camping or staying off grid for a while.

That said...the AirSense 10 ...you don't have to use the humidifier..it can be turned off without removing it.
You could use it in what we call passover mode...water in the chamber but no heat being applied to it.
For that matter that can be done with any humidifier.

i would go with a respironics for the direct 12v compatibility
but look at the models before the dreamstation
as it has a large footprint and also incorporates the humidifier like the A10

it does have a large footprint, but so does the system one...

the humidifiers on both detach, the dreamstation takes a custom power adapter, though it's not as expensive as the one for the resmed.

Incorrect.
The humidifier and blower unit are totally separate and not integrated like the AirSense 10 machines.

See...2 separate purchases

Having never actually seen a DreamStation to compare the overall footprint I can't really comment about that but I do own both a PR System One Respironics machine as well as a S9 from ResMed and there's not a huge amount of difference between the 2. One's a little taller and one is a little wider maybe.

I have the dreamstation bipap pro. While you buy the humidifier separate, they click together and it looks like one unit. Together it is approx. 8 x 12 inches wide and 4 inches tall, 6 inches tall where the hose attaches to the humidifier. (Edited to reflect actual measurements.)

Granny and I actually had a post on the relative sizes some time back.

AirSense with humidifier --- 10.04 in L x 4.57 in W x 5.91 in H ### Footprint 46 sq. in. ### Volume 271 cu. in.
Weight - Machine with Water Chamber: 2.75 lbs (44 oz.)

Dreamstation:
Dimensions - Machine Alone: 7.6. in L x 6.2 in W x 3.3 in H (19.3 cm L x 15.7 cm W x 8.4 cm H) (47 sq inches)

Dimensions - Machine and OPTIONAL Humidifier (Excluding Air Outlet Port): 11.7 in L x 7.6 in W x 3.3 in H (29.7 cm L x 19.3 cm W x 8.4 cm H) ### Footprint 88.92 sq. in. ### Volume 293.4 cu. in.

the airsense is has a much smaller footprint, because it's much taller, basically, they turned it upright.

I just measured my PR S1 BiPap

Length (side to side) with both humidifier and blower together...approx 10.5 inches
the blower itself is just a tad over 5 inches in length.

Width (front to back) approx 7 inches

Height approx 4 inches.

so the prs1 blower is smaller than the A10 and the dreamstation blowers
