This site so positive

Post by nobody » Wed Sep 28, 2016 11:04 pm

If it hadn't been for this site I wouldn't be where I am now with my CPAP. Yes there's drama and rudeness here but the sharing of real information without censorship far outweighs the bullshit. I'm so glad I found my way here first when I was new. I feel bad for the newbies who end up on other forums with censorship and bullshit that will just keep them frustrated and even giving up. Thank you to this site and all the many users who have helped me and so many others.

The people who profit from ignorance may be responsible.
They have deep pockets, and their dogma is accepted by far too many.

Yeah must be. I've been on some of these other forums where there are people saying it's dangerous to use a machine someone else has used because you could get an infection. Or that it's dangerous and illegal to change the pressure on the machine yourself (what are they going to do, call the cpap police?) Or saying that insurance won't pay if you change the pressure. All of it fear mongering bullshit. I started experimenting with pressure change early on and even though the DME got cranky with me about it, the sleep doctor didn't seem to care. He said just let me know where you end up so I can make a note of it in the record. But then he's a pap user himself so he understands. And my insurance didn't give a damn that I was changing the pressure. All they cared about was that I was actually using the machine. One person claimed they "know someone" that had their machine taken away from them because they changed their pressure. I called bullshit and got banned. LOL. THANK GOD FOR THIS SITE. Shame about the poor newbies over there who have no idea who to believe or what to do.

If my DME gets cranky with me, I know I am doing something right. Jim

I'm still in a couple of them. I think I'm going to zip my lip and steer people over here with private messages. That way newbies will still get help they need rather than bullshit.

what others are there out there?

of course there's apneaboard for the touchy feely crowd, they provide a valuable service distributing manuals, but the heavy handed moderation and freaky rules like they're passing secret agent messages ...

jason's forum at freecpapadvice.com/forum seems pretty loose and helpful, though low traffic. people can actually mention other forums by name unlike on apnea[censored].

apneasupport imploded a while back.

binarysleep is just for sleep techs.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I checked out those other sites when I was first diagnosed. I dropped them within the first week of finding this forum. They were useless or worse. Bad information, great empathy and sweetness and light but nothing else worth mentioning because that was all that was allowed to be posted. It was like being sweet to an alcoholic and handing him a drink so he would feel better about being screwed out of therapy.

The other sites were mostly worthless when it came to anything other then "Moral support"

I remember back when I first was diagnosed and started researching heavily as much as I could. I'd just gotten CPAP and dove right in. 100% compliant as far as using the machine. But my numbers were too high. I remembered that they tested me on my back but did the titration on my side. I started talking about adjusting the pressure on my machine my self slowly because I didn't want to wait 45+ days to see the doctor again. The response was like I was talking about committing a felony and looking for volunteers. Finally I found what I was looking for on the web and stumbled across this forum. There have been lots of people willing to spend their time and share their experiences on this forum. I love the fact that it's not really moderated.

You do have to sift through some interesting responses... some can be very... hmmmmm unique. I also found if you could deal with some of the quirky responses that this site has an amazing wealth of information and plenty of people who just want to help others so they have a better experience then they did.
