Relapse of cold, or symptoms caused by mask ????

Post by butterfly » Fri Feb 25, 2005 11:22 am

Curious … I’m a new user – first time last night !!!(Nasalaire with humidifier, setting at 14). I had posted about the size of the prongs, how they are supposed to fit, etc., but now I have ANOTHER question.

Can use of this (or any CPAP mask) cause one to have cold symptoms the next day? I ask because I HAVE been sick recently, but was pretty much better and sympton free, but this morning I have a terrible runny nose, sneezing and and watery eyes. SO I am trying to figure out if I’m relapsing or if it has something to do with the mask? I don't feel sick .. just nasty symptons, so it's puzzling.

Any ideas out there ???

I can think of any number of causes.

1) If you wore the mask with a cold, and didn't properly wash it and then wore it again, you could re-infect yourself. (Just like they advise you to sterilize your toothbrush after having certain types of diseases).

2) If you don't have a proper filter in your CPAP machine, I suppose it's possible that you're picking up dust off of whatever you have the machne sitting on and forcing it up your nose, causing allergies.

3) If your heated humidifier is set too high, you might get "runny nose" like symptoms from having "rainout" in your sinuses. (I've never heard this discussed, but once when I decided to see what it was like with the humidifier on it's highest setting, when I took it off, I felt like I had a batch of water running back out of my sinuses. And like you, I didn't have a cold or anything else but the humidifier on.

4) You may have read too many of MY posts and your brain is starting to melt and leak out your nose.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you which one it is, or even how likely they are, because I don't know your situation, and I am (to quote Rested Gal) not a doctor.

Liam, a humidified sinus is a happy sinus.

Since it was the first night of use, could you be sensative to the mask or the chemicals used in making it? Many people have to open a mask and let it "air out" for a few days before they can wear it.

Whoops, I missed the "new user" comment, so clearly it's not the reinfecting yourself one.

Sorry I missed that.

Liam, trying to help too quickly, didn't pay enough attention.

Very good point. It's also not unheard of (although less common than with latex) for people to be alergic to the silicon from which I believe they are made.

Li... ah... ah... ah... CHOOOO... iam.

Well thank you ! Some good suggestions/possibilities. I just called my doctor at the urging of all my co-workers. I will ask her about the possibility of an alergic reaction! I have never been alergic to latex, but don't know about silicone (or whatever), and maybe it could be a reaction to some chemical. I wasn't even THINKING about an allergic reaction ... more thinking the tornado in my nose might POSSIBLY have something to do with it. Hmmm.

Thanks again !!

Sinus rainout?.?.?....

That sounds disgusting.

Although I guess it would be easier than using a turkey baster to flush your sinuses.

Runny nose?

Post by glassgal » Fri Feb 25, 2005 6:23 pm

Hi Butterfly,

Did you wash your NAII before you used it? I was told to use Ivory dish soap and warm water. Most mornings I just rinse with warm water, but I always wash a new set of prongs. That could remove something left over from manufacturing that your system doesn't like!

Most people find compliance easier with the humidification set high, but some find the heat suffocating, and need to keep it turned down some. I currently have the flu (ugh!) and have used my NAII every night with the humidifier cranked up as high as it will go and can still breath through my nose! Remember what the doc says when you have a cold (or your kids) to get the humidifier out!

Just a couple of thoughts.

Sleep well,

Jane

rhineitis and strapless mask

I woke up one morning after using the c-pap and one nare run like a faucet all day. I took 2 pseudiphedrine later on in the afternoon and it went away and havent had the trouble again. I doubt a Dr. can figure that one out. Also want to ask a question: Where did the strapless mask go that used to be advertised on the c-pap sites? Can't seem to find them. Thanks!

I use nasal pillows, so do not have any of these leaky/air problems in my face, that others complain about. But do you have a heated humidifier? Do you wash the mask daily? Do you have a humidifier in the bedroom? (cool mist), or an ionizer? I have all these/do all these things, and I'm usually very stuffy, nasal, allergies, and these few tips have helped me, of course in my opinion only, lest someone think I am a doctor (NO NO NO!!).

Buttefly here .... I have a humidifer on my machine, but not a heated one. We have a humidifier (cool mist) in the livingroom, right outside our bedroom, although when we kick the cat out if she's acting up, that doesn't help the bedroom! Since I was a new user, and didn't know better, I didn't wash anything before using it. I got through night 3 last night (until 5:30am). I have been taking an antihistamine. I am feeling less runny. But I am going to start washing at least the nasal prong part daily for a while anyway. NOW my big problem is I have sores in my nose (I DID go out and get some saline gel). But I think that's because they gave me size HUGE (well, it says large) and I am SURE that was an error, and I struggle to get it all up my nose, so I am going to ask to try one size down.

All in all, I hold out hope that eventually, this contraption and I will live peacefully together !!! Reading posts from others who have overcome the initial obstacles has been SOOO helpful in keeping me optimistic. Last night I didn't cry before trying to go to sleep ... just welled up with tears. AND ... my boyfriend snuggled up to me and actually fell asleep like that for the first time in months! (I roar, or USED to, like a bear !!) So that helped tremendously. So progress is being made !!
