keep waking up every 50 minutes to an hour and a half

Post by tiredandscared » Fri Feb 12, 2016 4:30 am

I'm still getting used to the cpap machine. But honestly I think I'm failing badly. I can only sleep a very limited time (3-4 hours) of chopped up sleep. I wake up almost every 50 minutes to an hour. With ambien/zolpidem I can sleep 5 hours straight without waking up. But it's not a long term solution and it has a profound effect on my psyche. The mask I'm using is a little leaky. Nothing that affects therapy(95% of the time my leaks are well below 30/liter). But could ut be affecting my sleep? My ahi according to sleepy head is 0.0.

At the beginning of my therapy, I had the same problem of continuous arousals. The cause was the mask that was too noisy. I changed mask and the problem disappeared. Maybe you need to find your cause and work on it. 4 hours of sleep are the minimum, five hours is better but I have found great improvement achieved after 6 hours of continuous sleep.
Good luck.

How does your data look in the last few minutes of each segment? A complete sleep cycle is about 90 minutes while dropping deeper and deeper. This can also cause more events or transitional events. Your over all AHI is not as important as what is happening at the points where you wake up.

here is what it looks like. I have no idea what happens. But apparently i have a clear airway event and my pressure increases to 10 cmHO, when i wake up. I'm not sure if that's central apneas or if i'm just stopping breathing.

Your screen is missing information. At the bottom make sure all the Graphs are turned on. In the little box click on the triangle and make sure they all have green bars. If some are red click on them to turn to green. Do the same with the Flags at the bottom left of the graph. It only shows one 2hr 59min session. Since it records a 24 hour period is that all you used the machine?

Here are the graphs we need to see.
The graphs that are usually helpful are:
1. Event Flags
2. Flow Rate
3. Pressure (not mask pressure)
4. Leak
5. Flow Limit (only with Resmed machine)
Put your graph in that order by grabbing, by the labels, with your mouse and dragging it where you want it.
Now grab the line between the graphs and resize them until you get them in one screenshot.

Take a screen shot after you organize your graphs. You can push F11 ( or click file - view - fullscreen toggle) on your keyboard before you take your screens

How long have you been using CPAP? It takes a while to get really used to sleeping all tangled up with a mask, weeks or months even. I woke up every time I tried to move for quite a while.

I think I've identified the main cause. I managed to sleep 3 hours with the mask continously instead of 1 just by switching the tubing. The major issue seems to be leakage. Today I had very little leakage compared to normal. But i still get leaks after 3 hours. I have to eliminate that issue completely.

How did you sleep before CPAP? The chopped-up sleep you described is the way I generally sleep, even with medication, for the last 15 years or so (I'm 63), but worse since I retired 5 years ago. I've been on CPAP for about 6 weeks, and although I breathe better when I'm sleeping, I still don't sleep continuously, so it's hard to interpret my stats properly.

I woke up 2-4 times at night. During a good night I'd not get an awakening. Now I only seem to wake up if I get mask leaks.

I'm still trying to settle on the right mask, but one of the mask issues I'm trying to eliminate is that if the pressure goes up I can get a loud fart-sounding leak that wakes me up, even if there's no other leak noises the rest of the time. You on;the how a high leak number, but maybe you're hearing noises that wake you from time to time. Just a thought.
