First post....Advice please.

Post by Honeybea » Wed Feb 10, 2016 1:27 pm

Hello, this is my first post.....I use a cpap machine, had it about 4 yrs now but never got on with it....No ones ever properly explained anything to me about why I have this machine as I moved hospitals...I know I snore, I had a home finger probe test at first and I stop breathing, and I wake loads of times. Ive used my machine on and off and always told my dr/nurse this, no one has ever said its dangerous or anything if I don't use the machine.

The worry I have is my adult daughter has come into my room a few times in the middle of the night to see i'm ok....She said that when she's going to the toilet in the middle of the night she can hear me making funny noises from my bedroom....I must be that loud....she wakes me up and last night she said that apart from making funny noises, i'm gasping, gurgling and struggling......My daughter said I sound so awful its frightening her .what is happening to me! I wake up all disorientated, feeling really unwell? I'm just so tired. Now when i'm watching tv in bed at night my throat starts to shut while i'm still awake, sort of like my tongue touches the back of my throat maybe? But I know my airway is blocked. Why am I making these awful noises in the middle of the night.
I do keep trying to use my cpap machine, it is so uncomfortable, ive tried every mask and size possible....I fall asleep but as soon as I turn on my side the air leaks out the mask and I can never fit the mask secure to my face unless i'm lying on my back. I have tired dozens and dozens of times and end up with so many nights with no sleep because I can't get comfy, I also wake up with a really itchy face because i'm sweating under the mask?

Any advice anyone??

Hi Honeybea,

Welcome to the forum.

If you could please use the link in my signature to fill out your equipment profile, that would be a good start and help forum members better tailor their responses to your situation. If you could also list what pressure has been prescribed for your machine, that would help.

Have you tried the Elan Mask listed in my equipment profile? Reason I am asking is it is the only mask I can tolerate due to it being made out of cloth. If you haven't tried it, it might be worth a shot.

Anyway, once we know what you are using and what your pressures are, we'll be in a better position to help you troubleshoot your issues.

Welcome,
We need to find a way for you to get your treatment and to begin with we need more information. This site might help you register your equipment. wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile If your machine doesen't show up just type it into the Edit Signature area.
We also need to know what settings your machine is on. Once we get that info we can point you to your Clinical manual and offer suggestions to help. I second the Liner suggestion because they help absorb the oils that may be causing your mask to slip. They are also comfortable.
