There are some very serious medical conditions that cause CSR/PB. I think it's often one of the signs that a dying person is about gone.

Unfortunately, there are some very minor things that can cause CSR/PB to some extent. It's often one of the side effects of CPAP. It can be minor enough that it doesn't mean anything, or it can be a symptom of severe pressure induced central apnea.

The CPAP machines that report it tend to be "very eager" to report it and flag it when it's not very meaningful. You need to look at the airflow waveforms and see how deeply your breathing is reduced, how long and how often. Most of the time, it means nothing.

I think the programmers' idea was "Only the doctor will see this. We'll flag anything that looks like PB, and the doctor will look at the waveform and see if anything meaningful is happening." Unfortunately, most doctors don't bother to learn to analyze the data the machines collect.

Yet another reason everyone needs a fully data capable CPAP machine, and it needs to be reviewed occasionally by someone who understands it.

What MrGrumpy may not realize is that all the data that SleepyHead displays is recorded by the CPAP machine. SleepyHead isn't deciding if there is CSR or not, the CPAP machine is saying that there was one - incorrectly on many models of CPAP machines.

SleepyHead doesn't create or modify the data - it allows you to display it and analyze it. It's an absolutely wonderful tool that has been given to us! Support it, if you can - make a donation. It's a lot of work!

I'll point it out again, the machine that mrgrumpy alleges he uses (in the resmed S9 series)
DOES NOT REPORT ANY SORT OF PERIODIC BREATHING OR CSR.
No Resmed machine before the Airsense line reported CSR OR PB.

so, one has to wonder what kind of bullshit is going on...is he using a different machine than he's claimed, or is he just making shit up.

MrGrumpy wrote:Im a sick man, I did a download on sleepyhead. Its awful, awful...terrible, terrible. Says I have a real low AHI but the cheyennes stroke sydrome is flagged and I dont even know what cheyennes stroke syndrome is, but it sounds like something worse than plain old sleep apnea!

I must be dying, because sleepyhead said so and because i read it on the Internet.
It doesn't necessarily mean you're dying, really... and might not be cheyennes stroke, because the machine only detects something in the brain that MIGHT be; it doesn't have the ability to interpret what it is. Maybe you need to take your machine in so your doctor can look at the reports and explain it to you better. As far as the Internet goes, take everything you read there with a grain of salt; a lot of medical information gleaned from the Internet is either incorrect or the reader misinterprets it. I know someone who traveled 800 miles round-trip to the Mayo Clinic because she had read the symptoms of multiple sclerosis on the Internet, and from that, because she had 5 of the symptoms, self-diagnosed MS. She had all the tests in the book, and turns out she doesn't have MS. She said "but I have 5 of the symptoms" and he told her that all of the tests for MS are negative, and she doesn't have it.

Sleepyhead has no way of knowing that you're dying, and doesn't have any way of knowing.

Please check this out with your doctor. Medical professionals are the only people who have the ability to know whether or not you are dying.

his machine (reported to be resmed s9 autosomething) does not report, nor even claim to detect CSR, or PB, and thus, a sleepyhead would report nothing like that.

Why are you using a setting of 4-20? No wonder you are unhappy with auto. An no wonder you are grumpy.

Now that you have the data, look at what your pressure is doing and narrow the range or set it to cpap. You don't need to pay a doctor to do this. Some don't even know how.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Correct, it's rare that that's a good setting for anybody (except lazy sleep doctors) Having a wide open pressure range from 4 to 20 probably is near the top of autoPAP complaints list around here - usually prefaced with a comment about how a 'huge blast of air' is continually waking them up. The number one complaint will always be leaky uncomfortable masks... naturally.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
