Eye Problem with FFM usage
Eye Problem with FFM usage
My opthamologist wants to do surgery on my right lower eyelid but I explained to her that I am on ASV machine with FFM. I am right side sleeper and pressure from the Quattro cushion is pressing my cheek against the lower lid. We have postponed the procedure for now as there could be problems after surgery. I have an Amara View which I never could figure out but now going to retry. Has anyone else had issues with FFM's and eyelids?

The doctor most likely will provide a temporary eye shield after surgery, but it would probably still be best to forego your mask for a few days (talk to the doctor about it - you can't be the only OSA patient he's ever had) and sleep more upright (to lessen apneas) in a recliner at the time.

Re: Eye Problem with FFM usage
Julie - problem is that I roll onto my right side or stomach when I am sleeping and will have the cheek pressure even with the eyeshield. This is what has her worried - pressure pushing against lower lid would be counter-productive to the procedure. The curve of my lower lid has the lashes growing inward and irritating my eye - she wants to recurve the lid. We're not sure exactly sure why this condition occurred but might be related to my chemotherapy several years ago (?).

Re: Eye Problem with FFM usage
You really need to talk to the doctor with all the complications involved... I doubt that anyone here could make a meaningful guess about things and if they did, I would be inclined to question it anyway. I'm sure the doctor can provide an answer (? diff. type of shield/bandage) that we wouldn't know about. I don't think you're expected to solve this one by yourself.

Re: Eye Problem with FFM usage
Try the Hybrid - nothing near the eyes. That is the main reason I switched to it.

blackspinner - that's why I'm going to look at my Amara View later. I just could not get it to stop leaking even with pressures at 5/10.

Blackspinner - in the instruction booklet for the Amara View, there is a section called Contraindications which warns about eye surgery or dry eyes.

Sleep in a reclining chair, you will not be rolling anywhere or any way doing that.

Re: Eye Problem with FFM usage
There is a connection between the nasal passage and the eyes to allow tears to drain. Sometimes this passage allows air to go the other way - which is true with nearly ALL masks except the ones that cover the whole face. You ophthalmologist can tell you more whether that is a problem with you.andycole wrote:Blackspinner - in the instruction booklet for the Amara View, there is a section called Contraindications which warns about eye surgery or dry eyes.

Re: Eye Problem with FFM usage
Respiratory therapist at Philips-Respironics came up with this unbelieveable explanation for the contraindication for eye surgery and the Amara View.
It does say “not suitable” and I believe this is because the mask may slip above the tip of the nose due to improper fit/looseness and land on the bridge of your nose possibly blowing air into your eyes. I would suggest getting the proper size and making sure you have a great seal.
Since I was fitted for the Amara View at DME, I can't believe that she is a legitimate RT. I needed a hybrid mask to keep my Quattro from pushing my cheek into my eyelid while sleeping on right side or stomach. Surgeon has postponed procedure while I try to resolve the issue.
