Heart Decease and Sleep Apnea??

Post by racprops » Sat Feb 06, 2016 9:32 am

In 2013 I had to get a Quad bypass, when I checked out of the hospitable I was told I have Sleep Apnea.

Looking into Sleep Apnea I remember reading that it could have caused my heart decease. I felt this could really be the cause as my console was only “borderline”.

Lately I was told this is not correct.

So what are the findings now a days??

I think it's very likely to have contributed, though in what amount and/or how much sooner it happened prior to OSA diagonsis is impossible to say of course, not knowing your personal med history, condition or genetics.

PS I think you meant 'disease' (deceased means dead).

Wow, the second quad bypass related question today! Who can say for sure how big a part it plays? There's also your history of diet, exercise, meds, genetics... I could go on and on. Yes, sleep apnea is a big factor I suspect. What one can do about it is just keep up with their CPAP therapy, modify their diet, take their meds, possibly exercise (talk to your heart specialist first) etc etc. I hope you find a solution to this tricky problem... keep in touch and let us know how it goes.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Well this is the kind of things I have read:

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Condition ... r83nua2r4N

The evidence is very strong for the relationship between sleep apnea and hypertension and cardiovascular disease generally, so people really need to know that,” said Donna Arnett, Ph.D., chair and professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the incoming president of the American Heart Association.

And another report:

http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/118/10/1080.full

Sleep-related breathing disorders are highly prevalent in patients with established cardiovascular disease. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects an estimated 15 million adult Americans and is present in a large proportion of patients with hypertension and in those with other cardiovascular disorders, including coronary artery disease, stroke, and atrial fibrillation.1–14 In contrast, central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs mainly in patients with heart failure.15–

All related, my dad had CAD, OSA, atrial fib, 2 CABG surgeries and a defibrillator. Also adult onset DM thrown into the mix. One thing leads to another.

Depends on the heart condition. Most bypasses have to do with high cholesterol levels, so likely the heart attack had nothing to do with sleep apnea. In other cases, sleep apnea worsens an already existing condition.

I know a few older people (over 70) who use cpap and it has NO effect on their hypertension. It neither raises it nor lowers it. It DOES have an effect on their cognitive function however.

However high cholesterol levels are symptoms of a problem, not the problem itself. Sleep apnea causes one to eat really badly since you get cravings for carbs and sugar.

Sleep deprivation does a number on all your organs and causes hormone imbalances - it is a whole body screw up and anytime you do that it will have lots of effects.

I am an older people over 70. My cholesterol was considered high at 210. I changed my diet, refused cholesterol meds and now my cholesterol is below 140.
I can't remember what you said about cognitive function, but it must be true.

Also, I think diabetes II and heart disease are just symptoms of the same problem.
