so to update everyone.

I still have not been able to sleep a full night with the cpap. Each night i get like 1 hour in and end up still ripping it off feeling like im breathing under a blanket. Idk what to do at this point.

I loosened the mask straps to make it so the mask can inflate, i have always been making it as tight as possible. I put the min at 9 and max at 15 and i see every night its been adjusting to about 10/11 so i changed the min to 10.

What else can i try? =/ i am so SICK of being tired during the day and the cons it has with it. its ruining my life and this machine can help and i just cant seem to have it work with me.

is it my settings? my mask? =/

i also notice my machine has a setting to change from afelx and cfelx. the entire time my machine has been on aflex of 3. I just changed it to c felx of 3 to try it out for the night. I honestly have no idea what it does, i read about it but everywehre i read it confuses me about the two types.

I am so sorry you are having all these difficulties. When I started, I could only go a couple of hours and then I was awake for three. It was awful and I can empathize with how draining it is for sleep to be segmented and interrupted. I hope you are sleeping through the night soon.

Okay, I'm sure you're applying any every sleep hygiene tip and hint you can, the room is cool, sheets clean, hot bath before bed, lights off and no electronics! No smartphone, no computer, no glowy any monitor thing - you've reviewed your medications and made sure that anything that would make apnea worse has been addressed with your doctor and anything that helps it is taken before bedtime. You've ramped your humidity as needed? That was waking me in the beginning. Not a problem now. I also do a saline cleanse and flonase snuffle in each nostril before bed - wow it makes a difference for me and I take a singulair chaser because that too is great for the allergies and obstructive apnea. So you've done those kinds of things.

When you put on your mask, are you fitting it on your head like you care for yourself or like you don't want it to fall off? I was putting my mask a little tight on my head - it was just too dang tight. It wasn't until I really took my time putting on the mask and adjusting everything to be centered on my face and comfortable, but not cinched like I was going to wing-walk on a bi-plane - really I was wearing that thing too tight.

I never mess with my settings. Some people love that. I'm on auto and that is fine with me because I don't know any better right now and I get the rest I need.

So - if you get anything out of this - don't wear the mask too tight, you'll damage the melon; check your meds for capability with apnea, do stuff from list about "sleep hygiene" that makes your environment the best it can be for sleep. Don't sleep with electronics, television, smartphones - they will suck your sleep waves away!

respironics is very hand wavy vague "oh look over there! squirrel!" about it's *flex feature on all their machines.

basically, it provides a small, varying amount of pressure drop, a bit of reduction, as you start to exhale, that is supposed to be a 'comfort' feature. some people like it, some don't.

feel free to experiment with different settings, and pick whatever *feels* best for you. like the humidity setting, it's for your comfort, and there's no "right" setting.

Your thinking about this wrong, you want to set your minimum low, that way the machine can do its job and adjust to your apneas... instead of changing it to 10, try dropping it to 8 and see if that works better for you..

This part is going to hurt but I have not seen anyone tell you this....

Wear your mask at all times, if you rip it off, put it back on... DO NOT go back to sleep without it.. Your brain will get use to it, but right now your allowing yourself to take off your mask...

With that said, I had the same exact feeling and the reason was my machine at the time was not giving me the amount of pressure I needed and I had massive mask leaks... Any way possible find a mask that works for you, there are over 3000 different masks, find a provider that lets you try them for a couple days and if it does not work, trade it for another one... don't try to stick with a certain mask because you think it should work, find one that works...

The last think, DO NOT put yourself down, keep at it as this does work, it takes some time, It took me 4 years to find a machine and mask that worked for me, now I can not sleep without them You found a great resource in these people on this website....

actually, he's thinking about it RIGHT.

the closer you set your minimum pressure to the pressure that the machine spends a lot of its time at, the faster the machine can respond to any needs you have, and the better job it will do at keeping you from having more events.

so its been a few months of trying and STILL no luck. at this point i have no idea what to do. i dont think i can ever get the settings right feeling that i cant breathe out all! right now i am going to start out min of 8.5 and max of 15 on auto. will update in the morning of how it went. i feel like during the night i will rip it off feeling like i cant breathe at all =/

i stopped even trying with the mask and machine shortly after posting last but the past 4 nights iv been trying again since everyday im so damn tired and sleepy and its ruining my damn life. so im giving htis another go...

maybe i should contact the company who gave me the machine? I remember the guy who gave it to me was a sleep speicalist or something, although i do not know if i can just call him asking for help? might be charged or something? the office where i picked it up and met him isnt too far as well. maybe i should let him know but im sure he will look at me puzzled when i tell him, "hey i got this machine from you about 5 years ago, never used it for one full night!" lol
