Darth Vader noise!

Post by NMchop » Tue Dec 01, 2015 7:29 pm

The Darth Vader noise is bugging me.

This summer, I ran a fan when sleeping that masked the Darth Vader noise...now that it's winter, I get cold if that fun is on but man, that hose/breathing noise is distracting until you knock off.

I'm guessing I'll get used to it or find another white noise to mask it. It's only been a few days without the fan. Hoping I'll adjust. Is that the hose line?

Have you tried earplugs instead of a fan? Some people find them helpful.

I was bothered by a noise through my hose from somewhere, so bought a "passover" humidifier and an extra hose, hooked it all up together, and the noise was suppressed by all the baffles in the passover humidifier. Very quiet now.

I find that ear plugs amplify the Darth Vader breathing noise for me. Put your finger tips into your ears and see if it helps you or not. For me it actually made it worse...of course YMMV.
I eventually learned to "tune it out" but if I think about it...I hear it.

Perhaps substitute the fan noise for some other white noise like rain or creeks running or ocean waves from one of those white noise machines???
Is it possible to point the fan away from you so it doesn't blow back on you?

I point my fan towards the wall. Same noise to drown out the machine and no air circulating.

I used to run a fan all the time too, but my new bride doesn't care for it or the air movement. I bought one of these as a compromise, it gives me the white noise that I need without blowing air around. The nice thing about it too is that you can really dial in the sound tone and volume, which you can't do with a fan.

This would be a non-mechanical alternative:

The "Darth Vader noise" may be caused by the vent (normal), or opening and closing of the relief valve on you FFM (abnormal). See if the problem is from the machine, or the mask vent. If it is the mask vent, the easiest solution is to get a different model that is quieter. If the safety valve is opening, that is a malfunction, and would cause a very noticeable Darth Vader noise. If what you are hearing is the changes in pitch on the machine, that is a different matter.

If your spouse isn't complaining about it, just suck it up, and get used to it. It really isn't difficult to listen to your own breathing.

Maybe you need to think of it in a different way........like it's a methodical/rhythmic "puts me to sleep" sound.
I don't know, I've never used the mask you have in your profile so I can't actually relate to that one specifically. But, that's sort of what I do with mine, although it's actually a pretty quiet mask.

To reduce noise I have done the following-
Lowered my machine below the level of the bed
Use a hose cozy
Changed to a quieter nasal mask
Use a hose mgt set-up

I have also adjusted to the noise. I try to find the sound relaxing rather than irritating. It took me awhile though.

Best Wishes

We have one of these little Homedics sound generators... It's very adjustable in volume and works great, plus it is super inexpensive:

I personally like the babbling brook sound. You can use it for awhile and eventually lower the volume until you don't need to 'mask' the noise from the mask/machine any more. Worth a shot for twenty bucks.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

For me, earplugs shut out/dampens most of the outside sounds from the cpap air flow, and leaves just my own breathing sounds. My own breathing rhythm, without extra sounds does help me get to sleep. I didn't identify the "Darth Vader" thing as being an internal sound, it sounds to me like the air going through the various pathways, vents, etc.

If earplugs don't help, here's a thought, a web site that has ambient sounds like rain, ocean waves, and so on:

http://www.soundsleeping.com/index.php

I've used it quite a bit to cover ambient noise when I'm working, good site.

You can still run a fan, but away from you. If you have a smartphone, there are lots of apps that can be run with white noise, including a fan, although I prefer the ocean. It's funny. I have the Darth Vader sound on one of my masks and I find it relaxing.

Love the list of sounds for this one: "White Noise, Thunder, Ocean, Pain, Summer Night and Brook".

Somehow "Pain" sounds don't sound that relaxing to me. But maybe it's just me *smile*.
