GoofProof ol' friend.

Please beware of the dangers of men (and postmenopausal ladies) taking iron supplements. Many online warnings available about this for your reading pleasure.

If your doc says do it, then okay, but you might want to double check anyhoo.

And me? I take one blood pressure pill per day (not sure that I need it, as I do have "white coat" hypertension; however there is no side effect, so I go along.)

Supplements? Of course! Vitamins, minerals, fish oil, some extra D3, CoQ10, that sort of thing. All minor amounts, except for fish oil and D3 are a slightly more aggressive. (D3 last blood test was 60, so I'm in a good place.)

Best meds? Exercise, a good (low carb) diet, more projects than I can ever fit into a day, and a sense of humor.

I take 4 medications to treat hypertension, one anti-depressant, one for diabetes, one statin, Prilosec for GERD, and a baby aspirin. I have snored and stopped breathing during sleep for so many years, and finally got authorized for and completed a split sleep study. Despite the awkwardness with the mask, I was amazed at how I felt the next morning, and I am eagerly awaiting getting an x-pap, and starting therapy. My body got a little taste of what it has been missing, and it craves more!

My ex-mother-in-law lived alone in her own home to 92 taking just one pill a day. Her mom and maternal grandmom were equally long-lived and med-free and actively living alone into their 90s.

All I'm taking and using now are from the dentist, because of my implant surgery: Peridex and vitamin C. I used to be prescribed enough iron to make the pharmacist cringe, but I was able to get off the stuff after a year and a half.

Old thread, probably revived by snake oil dealer; or the athletic jersey creep.

Not to upstage you... This may give you an idea about how your area may stack up against another area per population. I live in Iowa in a small city of about 9,000 population. and the county population in 2011 was 16,815. One day during 2011's flu season the drug store in our grocery filled 800 'scripts. To date, that was a record!

Doctors are drug dealers, that's all they know how to do anymore. That is one profession that is desperately in need of overhaul. And that is putting it nicely.

Patients are also in need of an overhaul and that's putting it plainly. Many of the problems patients have today are the result of inadequate exercise and eating crap food (and too much of it) washed down with cola.

There is equal blame to go around on both sides.

Regarding doctors and meds, it is a complex issue. Unfortunately, with all the time pressures they are under and all the requirements they have to satisfy regarding the organization they work for if they aren't in private practice, it is easier for them to prescribe a med instead of sitting down with the patient and working out a non med solution. And even if they do offer a non med solution, they may not be up to date with the literature.

Just so you know, I don't mean to come across as defending them as this meds as the one size fits all solution greatly frustrates me also. But I have to deal with reality as frustrating as it is.

And speaking of cola, I haven't had a soda for years as one who remembers drinking pepsi to get my caffeine fix.
