Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
Any experience with this mask? I am a mouth breather and need a FFM, but cant manage to keep one on and tolerate it. I am thinking of trying this one. Opinions?

Re: Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
Have you used Full Face masks before you got the oral? If so, how does it compare? My concern is breathing only through my mouth. I mouth breathe by nature, but obviously air goes in through the nose as well. Trying to breathe with a nose plugged gets uncomfortable after a while, how is this mask with that? If you were to leave your nose unplugged, do you think a machine could compensate for the air loss, like a large leak, or is it too much?JDS74 wrote:Check out my post with the link in my signature block for my experiences. Re: Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
No, I have only used the Oracle 452.
My claustrophobia panic reaction prevents me from using a ffm at all.
If you can tolerate a FFM, it is a better choice.
This mask is for folks who can't use a nasal or FFM at all.
I don't think you can sleep with this mask and not control nasal leaks. It's not a matter of the machine keeping up but you staying asleep.
After a few weeks or months, you can learn to not nose breathe and issues of nose leaks go away.
In the intervening time, closing the nose is required.

Re: Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
I have used nasal pillows for 6 years and then I had dcr surgery. Because of the air coming through my tearduct my doctor switched me to the wisp nasal mask but unfortunately air is still a problem. I am looking at the Oracle oral mask as I think I have no other options. Just trying to get opinions on this mask I have read both good and bad reviews so I am a little apprehensive.
Re: Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
You really can't use the Oracle if air comes out your nose.
In theory, you will learn to close off your nose. It's the same action you use when you blow up a balloon. Even though there is pressure in your mouth, no air comes out of your nose.
The trick is to do this in your sleep. I found that I could put the mask on, start the CPAP, "pretend" I was blowing up a balloon, and my soft palate would shut and keep the air out of my nose. I could then slowly relax and the pressure seemed to keep my nose closed off.
For me, the air dried out my mouth and throat too much, and I went back to a nasal mask. An oracle mask does seem to dry people out more than others. I also found the sensation of not breathing through my nose to be uncomfortable.
There are disadvantages to the Oracle, but for some people, it solves problems and works for them.

Re: Oracle HC452 Oral Mask
I had to use the nose plugs at first. One night I forgot to put them in and found I did not breath through my nose...so just never bothered with them again.
I make liners out of soft material, like t-shirt. It is a 2 x 5 inch strip. I fold it in half and cut an + shape..one inch long. This liner goes on the outside of the piece that goes in the mouth.

Adequate humidity is a real issue with this mask so do not assume that you won't have to deal with it.
If you have other questions not covered by my post, please feel free to ask either as an open post or as a PM. I will try to help.
