Sleeping on your Left Side

Post by BleepingBeauty » Fri Nov 27, 2015 6:00 pm

He says sleeping on your left side is anatomically logical. Anyone have a relevant experience to share?

Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

After a big meal, it is more comfortable.
This also reminds me when I was a little green PIGGY.

As I recall from past threads, sleep on your left side for heart issues and sleep on your right side for digestion issues. But then I'm not a doctor, so please don't sue me.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

The left side position is recommended for enemas because the solution will flow downward by gravity along the natural curve of the sigmoid colon and rectum and this improves retention. Hopefully no one does that to any one of us when we are sleeping but perhaps gravity is related to his improved digestion while sleeping theory???

If you have any GERD issues sleeping on your left side allows any acid in your stomach to stay in your stomach. Sleeping on your right side can allow acid from the stomach to flow into the esophagus. When you have a chance look at a picture of your anatomy.

This is an advertorial to a non-medical DOCTOR.

He is selling his anti-medicine goods on his "natural" web site. According to him, the hundreds of astronauts must have had terrible digestion problems, since gravity, in his EXPERT judgements (not medical nor scientific judgements) is more important that the thousands of miles of the tubes in the every human body. It is so very true. The planets Venus & Jupiter are more important than our body too.

Left-side, back-side etc sleeping is something with which the healthy body has no problems. Excess weight is SAID to put pressure on the internal organs, including heart.

Generally these fringe scientific-like ideas are not contested by sensible science people, because the placebo effect has been proven to work very well. Anything you believe can be scientifically (statistically) to work, or not work. By the way, the voice of the Great Leonardo de Vinci tells you that this is true. Leo is one of the many previous lives that I lived, before I migrated into my current life form. I'll send you all a 3d-SMS from my next re-incarnetion, which should be due soon, god(s) willing.

When my GERD acts up, I HAVE to sleep on my left side. I had figured it out on my own but read the same thing and I can say with absolutely certainty - it is better.

It's just someone trying to expand on the left side sleeping for pregnant women on bed rest. There is no indication that it helps ANYBODY else. For pregnant women on bed rest, it reduces the pressure on the main artery that goes to the uterus. For most women, this is a non-issue, but when you are on prolonged bed rest due to pregnancy complications, they found the left side resting to be better overall for the fetus. There is no 'increased heart' thing going on.

Here is an interesting article allowing some variation of position related to individual health issues, concerns and personal comfort.

We are all different.

I totally agree. Normally, I sleep mostly on my side; but after my mastectomies/reconstruction,
I had to sleep on my back for several weeks. My incisions ran about 2/3 of the way around my body.
only a several inch wide path down the middle of my back was comfortable.
Rolling onto my side did NOT feel good. Pillows, especially the one from Cpaguy, were a blessing.
