Does bipap cause stomach problems?

Post by tobindia » Fri Nov 27, 2015 10:04 am

I go to bed around 11:00 and usually wake up between 3:00 and 5:00 with a "funny feeling" in my stomach and an urge to urinate. But within 30 seconds of getting up, I get a very strong discomfort in my stomach that lasts for about a half an hour. I am not nauseous, and I call it a discomfort, not a pain, but it keeps me from lying down. After several tests, my gastroentorologist has not found anything wrong. He is now wondering whether it may be related to my bipap -- air being forced into my stomach, or whatever. I do not have this problem during the day, only at night, and I always use my bipap. I have an appointment scheduled with my pulmonologist, but in the meantime, I thought I'd post this in the forum. I'd been using the bipap for a couple of years before this problem came along. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Two years without a problem; and the doctor says the bipap may be at fault.
You need a NEW DOCTOR!
Either that or lean on this one until he GETS TO WORK and figures out the REAL cause!
Or refer you to someone smarter.
Good luck.

Do a forum search for aerophagia... if it sounds like your problem, read on for possible fixes. If not, then try "silent GERD" and see if that fits. IF not, you could need e.g. an endoscopy, but I feel you won't.

Just a thought; but sudden aerophagia after two years of successful treatment
MIGHT be related to weight gain, or a change in sleeping position.
If you have been sleeping supine more lately due to aches and pains, there could be a connection.

I appear to swallow air when pressures go up and wake up with stomach discomfort. When I sit up for a few minutes, I burp and the discomfort lessens. Having discussed with sleep dr and pressures were reset. Now much less of a problem.

Thank you all for your comments. My symptoms are not in perfect alignment with what I read, but they're close enuf to discuss with my doctor.
