P10 issues after 15 months

Post by englandsf » Sun Nov 22, 2015 11:20 am

After well over a year of using my P10 pillows very successfully I have had a few uncomfortable nights recently . My number are OK (AHI 2-3, max pressure 13-14, major leaks below 1%) but the pillows don't seem to be sealing to my nostrils as well as they did.

I have started washing the pillows daily and the headset twice a week in hot water to shrink it (the two I'm using at the moment are 3 and six months old) but still getting a small leaking sensation and incomplete seals in certain positions. No large leaks on SleepyHead though. A little bit of congestion and a few mouth breathing moments.

I've tried trimming nose hair more often and daily nasal rinses, all to no avail. I'm thinking of stoping using cornice steroid spray for a while and maybe adding some humidity (I use passive pass over now but our heating is starting to run at night).

Anyone else every seen this or know how to tackle what is obviously a comfort issue not a therapy problem? TIA

I have not had my P10 for that long yet but it's become clear that the headband is the main issue with this mask. I was able to buy a spare pillow insert on ebay for $5 but haven't needed to use it yet.

SGearhart posted an idea here of making the headgear adjustable by adding a velcro cable tie. Here is his post about it: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=95045&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... 15#p976891

I have these ties around for keeping cables neat and amazon sells 100 of them for $5: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001E1Y5O6

Have others experimented with modifying the strap in different ways?

I have had the same problem. My original headgear with a mask purchase was 18 1/2 and spare headgear was the same. Now the ladies is 19 1/2 or 19. The men's is 21 1/2 or 21. Now the men's mask comes with 21 or 21 1/2 headgear. My DME said that she has been finding this in all new shipments for the last 6 months.
Froggie had a good suggestion of putting strecthy thread in the head gear to tighten it up a little. It helped a little last night but I only used two threads. I am going to add a few more today. Note: I am doing this with a pair of ladies headgear.

My sense is that after a year or so the silicone in the pillows becomes slightly - ever so slightly - less soft and conforming, and there is a benefit to replacing them. I agree with the poster who mentioned the head-strap. Even though I wash mine faithfully, and often in scalding hot water, after a year or so I ordered a new one, and on comparing their lengths, found the old one to be about an inch longer than the unused one. Perhaps if you knew a seamstress or seamster you could get them to take a little half inch nip on both sides. I may try this with my present one.

If it is the pillows that are messing you up, try the baking soda trick and see if that helps, just did mine and it is much better.
Boil 1 cup water in the micro, take the water out and add 1 tsp baking soda, give it a stir and throw in the pillows, leave them at least for 5 minutes then take them out and rinse with distilled water, leave to dry and voila..... new pillows.
Good luck

I have been on nasal pillows for a couple weeks now so I probably be not be much in the way of help But I use a lanolin cream at night, It helps my nose from getting any sores but also helps with keeping good nasal seal.

I have been using an Airfit P10 for about 2 years. A few months ago, I got a P10 For Her. The first night, the headgear was too tight and the nasal pillows were stuffed in my nose, but the headgear soon stretched so that it is comfortable.

It has been feeling loose during the last week. I replaced the nasal pillows today and was surprised that the mask no longer feels loose.

Medicare allows for 2 sets of nasal pillows per month and one set of headgear every six months. When applied to the P10, I think they have it backwards, The nasal pillows are more durable than the headgear. It is easy to have large leaks when the P10 feels comfy but is getting loose. I didn't realize that until I started using Sleepyhead, The large leaks disappeared after I got new P10 headgear.

Thanks all.

I have replaced the pillows, bit better. Tightened the straps by moving back on my giant head, no good. Added some humidity - helping a bit.

I get new mask every 90 days and new pillows every 2 weeks too -

The mystery remains...

I started on medium pillows, but then switched to large because they felt a little more comfortable... but the leaks were high often enough that I went back to mediums and the leaks went away again. It's a little less comfortable because they stick farther up into your nose, but it's OK once you get used to it.

So, EnglandSF... maybe try the next size smaller?

They leaked badly. I think the problem is when I adjust things too roughly and invert the inner cone. Did well last night being more careful...

tried 2 p10s and wound up progressively pinching and stitching up a bit on the back straps top and bottom to tighten it up. the loose fit seemed to creep up and give me some bad leak night and lower quality sleep. decided to switch to a mask with sturdier straps. not sure if the stitching affected anything, seemed to work okay. I think i stretched them out too much when putting the mask on. p10s are nice comfortable light masks. i think tight straps can cause some daytime pain on the scalp by cramping muscles and whatever else is on the scalp, vesicles or something.
