High pressures and sleep study questions
hi, i was diagnosed with very mild apnea (AHI just over 5) 2 years ago, and provided a resmed S9 which have used ever since. last week I tried it without the humidifier and noticed that the air pressure felt higher. also woke up with some very high air pressure that pushed my F10 full face mask away enough to leak. when I could NT get it to seal, I looked and the machine said 12.7. weird. sleepyhead shows low AHIs like 1-2ish
also, I only had a home sleep study at the beginning and none with the machine or any since. just that first one. I see my sleep doc once a year he asks a few questions and thats it. is this normal? fior all I know my weight loss could put me
thanks for any insights!

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
It is possible that you get more congested without humidity.

Thanks, but it is definitely not congestion. Not congested at all.BlackSpinner wrote:It is possible that you get more congested without humidity.

Why did you remove the humidifier? Put it back and put water in it but don't turn it on if you don't need it. A pressure of 12 should not be a problem with the FF mask...many of us use higher pressures.

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
Pressure needs can vary throughout the night depending on the status of the airway.
It's quite common to need more pressure during REM stage sleep or when sleeping on your back. Perhaps one or a combination of those reasons would explain the pressure increase that you experienced.

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
thanks for the replies. maybe I didnt explain it right. this is different than the past 2 years of normal use with normal pressure changes (which didndt wake me up or cause leaks). when I cant keep the mask sealed even holding it against my face, something is wrong. this only started when I took away the humidifier.
Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
Use the software available to see exactly what might have caused the pressure to go high or stay high.
Compare old reports to the new reports to see if you spot anything different.
Having the humidifier attached shouldn't make the pressure increase beyond where it was at before.
People take humidifiers off all the time when they go camping and are using batteries and they want the batteries to last longer and the humidifier is a resource hog so removing it makes the batteries last longer.
They don't complain of pressures being higher.
Why did you elect to remove the humidifier anyway?

LOL, actually, went camping!

So you went camping. Good for you. I couldn't ever go without my humidifier myself.
Put the humidifier back on. I honestly don't know why the pressure wants to go higher or seems higher with the humidifier off.
That is not a common complaint at all.

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
yeah, funny thing is this morning I woke up to hissing, leaking. usually that means just pull the mask away, drop it back on a couple times max and it will reseat and stop leaking. but it seemed like there was so much air that it just would not reseal no matter what. even when I pushed it against my face and forced it to seal, the velve was hissing. so I think maybe there is excess pressure. but I downloaded into sleepyhead and the pressure was low teens at the max (which is still high for me based on history). I dunno what to make of it because it is unlikely that the machine would overpressure AND not log that data at the same time. I will continue to monitor it.
As to leaving off the humidifier, it didnt seem to bother me much but it could be the weather. I have noticed that sometimes the tank empties real quick, and other times it goes for days without dropping much. I'm guessing thats got to do with the ambient humidity.

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
Perhaps the mask seal has failed, is it still as flexible as it was 2 years ago?
Also if you have lost some weight you may have changed the shape of your face a little?

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
OK Nothing conclusive but I switched to a new F10 mask I had recently got and less leaks. The round air port in the middle seals better so yeah that wears out it seems. Also, I re-attached the humidifier so who knows. I need to try the new mask without humidifier for a couple nights and see how that goes.

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
never tried it. I cant imagine trying to sleep without humidification. when my machine runs out of water it really irritates my nose and throat...
have another thread looking for info on how to run a full face mask with an inline humidifier like "HumidX" and it doesnt look like its possible. wish they had an airmini with the smallest possible humidifier built in!

Re: High pressures and sleep study questions
I would also check for a leak on the humidifier seal.
