Was sleeping through, now waking up

Post by johnmcgrann » Tue Sep 15, 2015 3:15 am

Hello.

I've been using a Phillips SystemOne CPAP since late June. In the beginning it totally changed my life - I was sleeping through the night, and felt consistently well rested. My wife was thrilled, too.

For the past several weeks, I've started waking up in the middle of the night. This has historically been a common problem for me - waking up around 2am, being awake for 30-90 minutes, then returning to bed for another 2-4 hours.

When I first started with CPAP, this problem essentially vanished. Now that it has resumed, I'm really frustrated, and I'm hoping to figure out what changed. I contacted my provider and their reports seem to indicate that the system is working in the same range of pressure as it has from the beginning. But I do feel like maybe it's less? At first, I had some adjusting to do because until I got the mask perfectly adjusted I would frequently have large, noisy leaks around the edges of my mask. I don't have that issue ever anymore - maybe I'm just getting used to it, but somehow I wonder if I'm really getting as much pressure as I was in the beginning when I was sleeping through the night. I am overdue to change the thin paper-y filter on the back (more are supposed to be on their way to me), but I find it hard to believe that that could be the issue.

Are there other technical issues that could be causing this? I'm new to this, so I don't know if there are complicated issues at play or if it's really just a matter of appropriate pressure from the device.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum.

Please use the link in my signature to register your equipment so forum members can better tailor their responses to your situation. After you do that, again, use the links to download sleepyhead software and then post screen shots of your data to the forum so knowledgeable members can help you analyze your data to see if anything might be causing the wakeups. Your data might be fine and you may have to look at other causes but looking at Sleepyhead is a good starting place.

Hopefully, you have a data capable machine that allows you to look at it on Sleepyhead. This site will help you figure out whether that is the case:

Do what 49er suggested. Get the software, download the data and look at the reports. The answer will more than likely be in there.

Since you DO have your equipment listed, and you're using an APAP, I'm guessing you're using a range of pressures and the pressure changes are disturbing your sleep. Or, the pressure increases are causing leaks, or you're leaking your therapy air out your mouth (you have a nasal mask listed in your profile). Those would be the most likely possibilities without any further evidence or information.

If you're in a position to sleep a bit later on the second go-round, or nap for an hour in the daytime (with a machine) then don't fight the 'syndrome' because it's not necessarily a bad thing needing fixing unless you need to be at work starting early with no chance for napping.

Yes, you need to look at your software to see what's going on, but if nothing really stands out that can be addressed with the machine, then you may just be another one who's doing what's not unnatural... It's been shown that long ago most people would sleep for a few hours (likely starting earlier than we do now), get up at some point, do whatever they did - work, etc. - and then go back to sleep for more hours til daytime. And many of us seem to be doing it now, for whatever reason, whether or not it's related to OSA or Cpap. I do it a bit haphazardly, depending on various things (tho' never take off the mask in my sleep), and at first thought I had to correct it, but since I'm not working 9-5 and can go back to sleep for a while after waking in the small hours, and then maybe nap again for an hour (or less) during the day, I no longer see it as something wrong, but maybe just an adjustment to getting older, a changing diet, etc. etc. I occasionally take a little (1-2 mgs at most) melatonin if I've had too much coffee too late, or need to be up for something in the a.m., but otherwise just take it as it goes and it all seems to be fine. Certainly the sleep I get with Apap is fine, no complaints, no inconsistencies, nothing.

Thanks, and sorry for the delay in getting back to this.

I've created an account and updated my equipment information.

I have SleepyHead installed, and have current data.

My biggest complaint is that I still wake up every night, somewhere between 2 and 4 hours after first going to sleep, and when I wake up, I struggle to fall back to sleep. This has always been a problem. I feel like it got better when I first started CPAP, and now it's like old times. When I first started CPAP, even when I did wake up, I could fall back to sleep on my own. In the past two weeks, I've relied more on Ambien to get me back to sleep.

I do have a lot going on work/stress-wise, which probably doesn't help.

Of the data available to screenshot, what would be the most helpful place(s) to start?

This thread has examples of what data we usually like to start with.

Since the problem predates cpap therapy don't be surprised if nothing stands out on the reports but it wouldn't hurt to look to make sure.
