pressure changes and leaks

Post by mecheng » Sun Aug 30, 2015 11:45 am

My wife is using a PR1 machine and we have been trying to reduce her AHI over a number of months it can climb to 16 but is usually round 6-8. Our first discovery was that she seems to be hyper sensitive to any pressure change so we have gradually (over a period of months) narrowed the ability of the machine to change pressure. We came to the conclusion that a fixed pressure of 10cm seemed to giving the best results that we could achieve. We have been away in our motor home twice recently and her AHI has dropped to 2-3 during these times, but not consistently we still got an odd 8. We have tried different masks and new pillows and have discovered that almost any leak will start my wife having centrals in very short succession it is as though even though the pressure is been maintained the volume of air moved is having an effect and her inability to correct her breathing as quickly as the machine responds to the leak so this causes the centrals and therfore as the leak increase and diminishes the centrals continue. I think the bed in the van may be causing less leaks or she may just be more relaxed when away and not moving to cause any leaks. These leaks are quite small and no where near large leak territory and I think it would be difficult to improve on them too much but we are working on it. Has anyone else experienced this or has anyone any ideas that we may try.

Welcome, mecheng! Please go to the profile and fill in your wife's equipment.

Go to User Control Panel in the upper-left corner, then Profile, then Edit Equipment and choose the right equipment and text mode, please.

This will append the information to the bottom of all of your posts like you see under this one.

Have you ever used the free SleepyHead software? The AHI number on the machine doesn't give the details you need to figure out how to improve things, but the detailed data usually does.

I have now entered my machine details as my wife's equipment is the same as my own apart from the fact that she uses a Philips Respironics wisp nasal mask. She has also tried the swift FX during our tests.
We have spent the past three nights in our motor home on the drive to run some more tests and to check out the new battery bank for duration when we are of grid and she is using her machine. Our neighbours must now think we have totally lost it
Yet again her AHI has dropped to around 5 this time. I know this is still high but this seems to blow my original theory out of the water. We now have two things to check over the next couple of nights.
1. With being on battery we removed the humidifier to conserve power. So we need to try without the humidifier in the house tonight.
2. We need to take the mattress from the van into the house and give that a try.
We are going to try the swift FX again after that but I am running out of ideas

Uhhh - did you hit Submit after entering details? There's nothing under your note (in blue writing like what's under mine).

Click on User control panel under Cpaptalk.com (tiny blue writing). Then hit Profile tab. Then fill out the appropriate info in text. Then hit Enter, submit, whatever. And see if it works (look at this thread afterward and see if it's all there).

I had done all of that twice but have now tried to just write it in as a signature and at least in the preview it is showing. Thanks again

Well we removed the humidifier last night and we spent the night in the house my wife's AHI has dropped from 10 to 3 again. I know one night does not really signify anything but we will carry out some more tests tonight in the house and while away in the motor home over the weekend. Crossing fingersfor a good result, I will report in on Monday or Tuesday.
