Weight Loss

Post by CaptainRaven40 » Thu Sep 03, 2015 7:43 am

Hello everyone! I just started a diet this past Monday and it is only Thursday and I am down 11.8lbs. I know and realize there is all the water weight and all of that when you first start a diet, but it has really made me more motivated to want to lose the weight. I am a very big guy and I really need to lose the weight. Not only to help with the sleep apnea, but my overall health and so that I stick around for along while. I am only 29. I was just excited when I stepped on the scale this morning and realized I had lost that much! I wanted to share that if you are on the fence about needing and wanting to lose weight then do it. If I can do a diet and lose some weight you can too! Not trying to brag. I just am proud of myself and would encourage anyone else to do the same and try and achieve the health that they want. Cheers!

Congrats. Good job.
Keep it up. I know it's not easy...nothing worth having ever is.

You may already know that almost everyone who starts "a diet" fails.

The successful ones change their "way of eating".

I do know that and I have been down that road before. I am changing my way of eating, but for conversation for most people it is easier to use the word diet and know that you are changing your way of eating.

Thank you Pugsy! I am going to do my best. My wife is also on the change over too so it makes things easier because we can help keep each other on track.

Hang in there. Weight loss will slow down and is often not steady, so you have to be ready to stick with it when the scale isn't showing you much love. Here's a couple of tips from someone who lost 75 lbs and has kept it off three or four years now (I've lost count!):

Take photos and measurements. Sometimes those change even when the scale doesn't move.
Always carry some acceptable food with you in case you are in a situation where you are hungry but all the choices are bad.
If you and your wife are together on this, clean out the pantry and fridge to avoid temptation.
Take on new exercise slowly. Often newbies are so enthusiastic they overdo at first and end up in pain and fatigue that discourages continuing. You CAN lose weight without punishing yourself Biggest Loser Style.
Don't gloat when you lose more than your wife. Men don't have the same hormonal issues and tend to lose much faster (damn it!).

Hopefully whatever diet you are on emphasizes REAL food, good nutrition, and it's something you can imagine doing for the rest of your life because there is no true endpoint. If you lose weight the ONLY way to keep it off is to continue what you did to lose the weight. My child's orthodontist said that she only has to wear her retainer as long as she wants her teeth to remain straight, and "dieting" is the same. You only have to do it for as long as you want to keep the weight off. So it's incredibly important that you eat in a way that you love and it's sustainable for you.

Above all, take pride in this positive step for your health.

Congratulations! Keep up the great work!!

As someone who is also on a diet/changing the way I eat, I will also suggest that once in a while, treat yourself to something - if you can without overdoing it. Once a month, I allow myself a trip to Dairy Queen or McDonald's for ice cream. I get the smallest one possible and MARK THE CALENDAR so I know I cannot have anything like it again until the following month.

And sure -- your weight might creep up a bit (mine does) but I still continue losing throughout the months.

I've been doing this "once a month treat" since April (started new eating in March) and as of this morning -- I have lost 51 pounds.

So if you can do it, it's a great way to NOT feel so deprived. But you have to have self control to do it!!!

Thank you for the response and for hearing about your weight loss success. I never brag about losing weight in front of my wife. She asks how much I tell her and I give her positive feedback on what she is doing and has lost. We have cleaned out everything except for dog treats :lol and some homemade frozen desserts made by her mother that we will keep for the times we have people over for dinner. We plan on starting slow with exercise. She has started doing yoga stretches in the morning, but we are going to start small with short walks and go from there. We are basically going for smaller portions and MUCH healthier options and cutting out foods that we personally know put weight on us. We have not done the measurements, but we have done the photos. I didn't even think of measurements! That is a great idea! Thank you!

So glad to hear your success story! We were told by a nutritionist to splurge on a very small level like you are saying once a month. I know the weight will flat line and creep up here and there, but as long as I am eating better I know it is helping and the weight will come off as long as I am diligent. Thank you for your response!

Cheers!

Every time I read about portion control I think about my mom (she's 84 now so I try not to rock the boat with her ideas) and her telling me that a small dish of ice cream "won't hurt anything"...and I used to tell her that it doesn't matter if it takes 1 night to eat the half gallon of ice cream or a week or 2 weeks or a month...I have still eaten that half gallon of ice cream and it's still sitting there on my butt.
She still can't grasp the totality of that half gallon of ice cream.

What I do is not even bring that half gallon home because I know I will eventually eat it and I know it will sit on my butt....but I have switched to the frozen fruit bars and with only 70 calories not as likely to end up on my butt. I find them quite tasty and they take care of my sweet tooth yearnings for ice cream.
