Humidifier turned off and odor

Post by Luthie2006 » Mon Aug 31, 2015 9:20 am

After 1 year, I am still struggling. I have recently turned all the humidity off on my humidifier and on the Climate hose, and just have distilled clean water in the resevoir every night. I did change hoses last night to a spare climate control hose that I had not used in awhile that is older. I had an odor from the mask immediately upon putting it on that smelled like an old musty basement. My room has an air purifier so the room smells ok. Would having the humdifier turned totally off and water in the humdifier cause that musty smell coming out of the mask? Is the musty odor coming from the hose? And does anyone know what to do about this? Thank you.

Blame the hose. It doesn't take much mold to smell. You could try cleaning it,
but I suspect the smell is embedded in the plastic.

Thank you Chunky Frog: So odors have have nothing to do with turning off the humdifier settings to OFF? I didn't realize mold smells? The long hose might be the culprit? It really smelled like somebody's musty basement. The thought of breathing this into my lungs for 2 hours! Yuck! I finally just threw the mask off.

Most likely the hose, try running very hot water through it with a squirt of washing up liquid - rinse, then allow to air dry for 12 hours or so. I do that every month for the fresh smell bit it also helps keep my hoses clean. Your insurance may cover a new hose every 90 days, mine does.

Wash the tank in the same way too.

I would suspect the hose and it could have just been a musty odor from the hose being closed up in something.
Don't know how you stored it. It may or may not have mold in it.
These plastic hoses seem to absorb odors fairly easily. I would just switch out hoses and see what happens.
If it is just that hose...perhaps set it out so it can really air out a lot with lots of ventilation available after a really good hot water washing.

Take the hose to your sink and fill with vinegar, slosh it back & forth and drain. Run warm water through it for about a minute then smell it, if still smells like vinegar rinse again. This is the way I clean my hose about every 6 months. good luck. This should eliminate the musty smell if coming from the hose...

If you are not using distilled water and have tap water sitting in the humidifier....that could be the smell

It is distilled water, and I did wash the hose with soap and water. But maybe it is time to retire that one! At least I know where the culprit odor is coming from.

Try soaking it in a small bathroom sink filled with hot water and a full box of baking soda, the longer the soak, the better.
