So Very New
So Very New
Please help. 12 years ago I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, but I couldn't handle it - machine, mask, noise problems were abundant - and I gave it up after about a month. The condition is now worse. I had another sleep study done a couple of months ago and reconfirmed my condition - moderate. I must use a full face as I open my mouth (but the lab said a nose mask would work for me although I did open my mouth during the sleep study with the nose mask. Anyway, I tried it at home and it was awful - kept opening my mouth all night). Total number of times I've used the cpap this go around is about 5 since I had to wait for a new mask and recalibrating the pressure. Fast forward to last night. I thought I was doing really well until around 4:30 a.m. when I felt water on my face. I took off the mask and the hose was dripping water. Today my lungs hurt; I'm coughing slight phlegm; feel groggy/sleepy; headachy; and finding it hard to think of words (like the word "moderate" a moment ago). I'm eating ok and breathing is getting better. Could this have been caused by the water being inhaled?? Tonight I plan to reduce the humidifier from 6 to 5 and see if that helps. I also had the mask on tighter than usual last night (but I had no leaks) and had marks on my face this morning. Please know that I so want this to work for me this time and I'm glad I found this forum. thanks for any hints/help you can give me...

Reducing the humidity is a very good idea - if local humidity is high to begin with, you may not need the humidifier at all. And be sure the machine's on a table below your head so the water won't run down.

Please fill out your user profile so we know what kind of equipment you have. Like do you have a heated hose?
I would suggest that you read the sticky thread above about sleephead, it is free software that reads the CPAP data from you machine so you can see what is happening while you sleep. You would also need an SD card reader if you don't already have one.
Lungs hurting is pretty typical as you get better breathing with CPAP and you exhale into pressure which you are not used to. All this uses different muscles then you are used to and make you sore for a while.
For your other symptoms we really need to see your data to figure out what is going on.
While you adjust the humidity also know you can adjust the air temperature that might help too
As for the red marks, check out padacheek.com, they may have a solution. The owner is on the forums and a CPAP user so she knows about this red thing
Hang in there you can get it done, protect your health

Re: So Very New
yes, reducing your humidity may help...... it pays to watch the weather in your area & periodically adjust the humidifier settings accordingly.
My humidifier is set much higher during the winter and is practically off during the summer

Re: So Very New
Hi all,
thanks for your input - truly appreciate it. Here is what is happening now: I reduced my pressure from 10 to 8 this past weekend because I was having severe cpap gas - doc knows I did this and is ok with it - even said it's ok to go lower. Ok, so that eliminated the gas - BUT - it is produced a different problem. I am now sleeping more than 8 hours and I can't get out of the sleepy feeling when I awake. Right now it's 5:30 p.m. and I feel so sleepy. I took a one hour nap earlier - timed it because I didn't want to sleep too much during the day. My brain is also very foggy and I can't remember simple things - total fog. I can't help thinking I lowered my pressure too much. AHI's have been below 5 - not before 1.4 and last night at pressure 8 it was 2.2 - so it did go up slightly. I just don't understand the sleepiness, brain fog - oh...and the feeling like I've been coughing - but haven't been. I breathe ok when I take a deep breath - just feel...tired. Any of this make sense???

Re: So Very New
That's fairly common. The chest wall muscles are getting a little bit of an extra work out when exhaling against the pressure. Like any new exercise that we do, muscles can get a little bit sore (or a whole lot sore) until the muscles get accustomed to the new exercise.SleepyDeb wrote:oh...and the feeling like I've been coughing - but haven't been.
So this should pass fairly quickly.
I don't know what to tell you about the brain fog or extra sleepiness.
Do you take any meds that might have those side effects?
Or when you are getting those 8 hours of sleep....are you waking often during the night for any reason like fiddling with the mask or just being aware of the mask and machine? Fragmented sleep from multiple wake ups will cause those symptoms.

Re: So Very New
Hi and welcome! It takes awhile to work out issues when first starting. Keep up the good work
Try using a hose cover to help with water in your hose. Water in the hose is called "rainout". I found it is worse the cooler the room is and so have a really thick hose cover for summer when the room has air conditioning and a thinner one when room heated in winter.

Re: So Very New
Make sure your machine is sitting lower than the bed. Water does not travel upwards to well...
If you are getting lines are your face from the mask I would suggest you look into mask liners.
They also help with leaks.
I wish you well...

Re: So Very New
Pugsy - yes, I do fiddle with the mask at night and sometimes have to pull it off to scratch my nose or refit; but the sleep I'm getting seems so deep and drug like (oh, I take no sleep aids and meds are only zantac and vit D). synthroid I take in the mornings - and TSH is in my normal range. I did feel more refreshed after my nap today. I have to work tomorrow and I am concerned I'll be dopey sleepy like I was today. The only other thing I can think of is that my humidifier ran out of water last night and I woke up with a stuffed right nostril - I could have been working harder to breathe and maybe that too kept me from getting restorative sleep. I'll see how it goes tonight. thanks again.
