Long time user now can't fall asleep with CPAP

Post by beth2507 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:36 am

Hi everyone,

I am diagnosed with mild OSA and have used CPAP for about three years. I have always done well with it. I had little to no trouble adjusting to it and have used it ever since. I experienced a period of time where I had difficulty using the mask about 1.5 years ago that lasted about a month and improved with some adjustments to the machine. About 6 weeks ago I started with some insomnia that has improved with cognitive behavioral changes, but during this time I have had my mask on and off and not been using it consistantly because I haven't been sleeping consistantly. Now, I just can't get back to it. I get it to bed sleepy as can be and put the mask on and feel so awake. Some of it is anxiety I guess but I'm not sure what to do about it. My sleep medicine doctor says my machine is fine and I just have to get back to it. She said to get out of bed when that happens, do something for awhile and come back and try to put the mask on again and just repeat it. Its hard because I feel like I sleep fine without it and feel well throughout the day without it, but it is a struggle to get back to using it. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice?

This is something to speak with your doctor again about, but my doctor prescribed me a sleep aid (Ambien) for insomnia and told me to take it as I started using the CPAP to help in getting used to using it and slowly come off of it. I am no doctor, but it is something to discuss with your doctor. Good luck! Cheers!

Yes. Please fill out your profile with ALL of the exact equipment and settings you're using. Without any info to go on, we have absolutely no idea what to suggest. If you have a data-capable machine, you could be using software to download and review your data.

This is like saying......"My car's gas mileage isn't as good as it used to be. What's wrong with it?"

Just wondering if your needs are different at this point in life and some settings adjustments would help.

Here are some basic requirements to help avoid insomnia,
- Practice good sleep hygiene (Google it and read several sources)
- Eat a good diet
- Have a regular, moderate exercise program
- Try to avoid daytime naps.
- Practice total abstinence of caffeine including sources like chocolate
- Review all medicines, vitamins and supplements you are taking to make sure none are interfering with sleep
- Optimize emotional stress in your life
- Use CPAP software to make sure your therapy is optimized
- If you still don't feel or sleep well, make sure you have regular wellness visits to confirm there are no other medical problems.
About that software, your machine, S9 Escape™ CPAP Machine with EPR™, is not "efficacy data-capable". This means it does not report data about how the CPAP process is performing at night. Most of us place a high value on efficacy data in order to make sure our therapy is working properly. When it is time for you to replace your machine, please let forum members help you choose an appropriate machine.
