It is possible to get off Cpap by losing weight.

Post by cpapguy21 » Thu Aug 27, 2015 7:36 pm

Hey everyone! I've posted on here before a while back to ask if it's possible to get off Cpap by losing weight. Many people I believe said yes but it's most likely not a weight problem. We'll I now lost a total of 150 pounds and took another sleep study. My old sleep study was waking up 7 times and hour and having breathing difficulties. That was when I weight 362 pounds. I now way 212 pounds so I took another sleep study to make sure. I kept in my mind I'll most likely get another pressure change but not be off it. I was wrong! My doc told me I was sleep apnea free only slightly waking up 7 times in 7 hours of sleep. I improved greatly on the test so I no longer need cpap. The point of this topic is to reassure people it is possible to get off cpap by losing weight. And I hope the best for you all in the future.

Rarely; very, very, very, VERY rarely.
You probably never had apnea as it is commonly manifested.
Don't get rid of the machine. Weight comes back more quickly when your sleep is disturbed.
Congratulations, for now. Fingers crossed for you. Oops, damn webs!

Had you been off of your cpap machine for several nights before having the recent sleep study?
If not, the test results would be questionable.

In any case, don't sell your equipment. "Something" caused you to gain weight in the past. It's not out of the realm of possibility that it could return (OSA and weight).

Oh no I will not be selling or getting rid of my equipment, and yes 2 days prior I slept without cpap as told by the doctor.

I was told to come off my machine for the same reason (weight loss and sleep test) in June 2014 as I too had lost a high percentage of my weight from the previous year and my sleep test was good. I finally gave it a go coming off the machine from the first of January this year. I initially suffered withdrawal symptoms from the machine it was as though part of me was missing and I had trouble getting off to sleep. I had been 99.9% compliant 7-8 hours a day.

After 21 days though I started to feel fatigued and congested, this may have just been a bug but never the less I reverted back to my machine.

I have now lost another 15lb bringing my weight down to 133lb with a BMI of 22. I was originality classed as obese with a BMI over 30.

I came off my machine again in 37 days ago and am still monitoring my O2 overnight my sleep pattern with a Withing's pulse and recordings on sleep as Android. I am also monitoring my capabilities in the gym as this was the first thing to suffer in January. So far this time everything seems to be OK and I actually seem to sleep better than with the mask in that I am not waking up fully in the night as often as I did with it. I actually seem to be sleeping for a slightly shorter duration as well and my capabilities in the gym are still increasing with a record cardio work out in the gym for me today of 1323 calories.

BUT if things start to go wrong I am quite prepared to hit the mask and machine again. I anyone can suggest anything else I should monitor I am quite prepared to give that a go as well because I do realise what the consequences of sleep apnoea can be. By the way my blood pressure is normal and I have a resting pulse rate in the 40- 50 range.
