Help - Respironics System One - Noise?

Post by qwerty3656 » Wed Feb 27, 2013 11:25 am

Hi New to the Forum. - Just bought the Philips Respironics System One. When the A-flex or C-flex kick in (everytime I exhale), there is a humming/whining noise - changing pitch as it reduces and then increases air pressure. It is not that loud, but in a quiet room when you are trying to get to sleep, it is very noticeable. I was wondering if this in what others have experienced, or do I need to return it? Thanks for any assistance.
Regards;

Whats your pressure and mask? Minus well fill in your equipment in the profile settings.

Thanks - I found the equipment section and think I added it correctly.

My pressure is 12 and I have most recently been using a full-faced Mirage Quattro. When I am not congested I try to use a Comfortgel nasal mask. I don't use the humidifier. I have had a cpap machine for 10-years or so, but recently upgraded the machine. I've had machines die on me in the past, and I don't want to keep a "lemon". Maybe it is normal, I just was not expecting the low-level whining.

I just had the same problem but mine was on the inhale. I ended up getting a new machine and its a lot lower now. However, my DME said if anythign the noise should be on the exhale not the inhale. Hope this helps.

I say give it another day or two to let the machine settle.

I'll see about testing my PR1 machine with the same mask. My setting is also at 12cm and I'll try to record a video clip to capture the noise.

I disagree, and that is not my experience. With AFlex or CFlex enabled, the machine is sending less pressure during exhale, and is in my opinion quieter. As soon as I begin to draw a breath it spins up. This is audible but not disturbing.

Also, when I first get in bed and mask on I am breathing somewhat heavier than when I am close to falling asleep, so it starts off which a large difference and bit of noise, and as I settle so does the machine.

Since I've been on xPAP for so long, I find the noise quite comforting. It "sings" me to sleep. (Yeah, OK, that was a bit much)

I agree with the OP. Everyone said in reviews how quiet the 560 is.

I think mine is louder than the 150 model I had. It certainly isn't quieter. Also, when in FLEX mode it does make more noise on the exhale.

Not that it bothers me as I usually wear earplugs, but I expected it to be virtually silent from the reviews I read, and it's not.

Noise level perception seems to also vary with people.
I hear my PR S1 machine mainly on inhale...the ResMed S9...mainly on exhale but my husband says the PR S1 he can't even tell it is on.
Some of what we "hear" is conducted noise from the machine through the hose or mattress.
I can plug my ears with my fingers...sound doesn't diminish at all...so I know it is the "noise" that is conducted through the hose that I am hearing more than the actual machine noise.

So there's vent noise from the mask...there's machine noise that may vary if exhale relief is used...there's conductive noise and finally just simple machine noise because machines just have a hard time being totally silent and some people are more sensitive to sounds than others.

Hello-

I recently upgraded my PRS1 from model 550 to model 560. Was really happy with the 550 for the past two years and wanted to get something a little newer with my insurance money. However, I also noticed the 'whirring' noise on the 560. My pressure is 14 and I use the Opus 360 mask as well as a newer Wisp.

At first I thought the humming was something rattling on my night table or in the mask. However, I put the 550 and 560 side by side, in a quiet room, and with the exact same settings (A-Flex, etc) it is very apparent that the new 560 is 'louder' on inhale/exhale than the older 550.

I am talking with my DME supplier about swapping the 560 for something else, considering Resmed S9. I'm curious about the poster who said it takes time for the machine to settle. It'd be nice if this is the case. My 550 is 2.5 years old but I never remember the 'noise.' The 560 has only been used for 15 nights. I'm going to continue to use it for another week while I work out an equipment swap.

check the total hours on your new machine. maybe your new machine isn't really new. maybe its really old and used alot.

qwerty --

Even with the exhale noise you describe, the 560 should be quieter than just
about any older generation machine.

Do you find that the 560 is louder than the machine it replaced? And, if
so, what older machine did you have?

I found that my machine is much quieter with flex at its lowest setting, and the setting doesn't bother me at all. After 3 years I have to think about it to hear my machine. I suppose it's because I'm used to it, not that the machine changed at all.

Late response but I have had the same noise problem.(high pitched noise)Machine was silent at first but after awhile it started to make noise. Have replaced 3 machines .I now know noise is caused by myself overfilling water tank. When tank is overfilled water I believe will enter machine where motor is located and over time will deteriorate and or wash away any lubricate and or cause motor to labour and cause noise and become over time too load to sleep. Take water tank and see how high you can fill with water before it will overfill and be sucked into fan side of machine.

I have returned 2 "Phillips Remstar Auto A-Flex" machines in the past 6 months for this problem. they always start out fine for the first 2 moths or so. on returning the second machine they claimed that the whiny high pitch noise is due to the fact that the pressure of my exhale was stronger then the pressure of the machine thereby causing the motor spin the opposite direction. this was burning out the motor?!? I'm not sure of how valid this is but thought maybe others have heard the same thing or know how to prevent this noise?

If you're using a "Flex" setting, try turning it off.
