Hello,
I recently purchased the resmed S10 with Climateline heated tube. Also signed up for MyAir to receive daily sleep data. All of this I'm happy with, particularly the heated tubing. I have been trying to get answers from Resmed but no straight answer has come back. I'm hoping someone can offer their options.
The CPAP comes equipped with an internal cellular device so they can collect this data on a daily basis. Initially I wasn't too thrilled about having what essentially amounts to an active cellphone beside my head all night long. It also occurred to me that the heated tubing is lined with copper wire. Put these two factors together and now that active cellphone is essentially sitting on my face. My question(s) is this. Does the transmission of data/ Resmed collecting that data ONLY after I wake and turn the machine off? Can I run the machine in Airplane mode during the night and switch it back to transmit when I wake? Thus nothing transmitting while I sleep? Perhaps I'm overthinking matters but I'm assuming nobody would sleep with an active cellphone on their pillow so why would anyone do essentially the same with a metal tube attached to the S10?
Thank you!

You are overthinking the cellular thing, but that's OK, nobody fault you for being on the cautious side of things. There are established limits to cellular energy transmissions and no empirical evidence showing a link from cell phones to tumors, although there is evidence that a cell phone held next to your head does transmit heat to your nogin, so the recommendation is to not have a transmitting cell phone pressed against your head for more than thirty minutes at a time. With this in mind having the machine transmit a few bursts of data for a few seconds that is no where near your head is not really an issue. The Resmed literature indicates that the nightly data is not transmitted until you shut the blower off, and it may be up to an hour after that for the data transmission.............it's really a non-issue from a health stand point.nisedog wrote:Hello,

If you want to be super duper cautious you could leave the machine in Airplane mode at night and then turn wireless on in the morning when you stop using the cpap since the data doesn't get transmitted till you turn the blower off anyway, but I would really not be concerned having the machine operating the cellular connection even while attached to the hose and mask............it's the least of your worries in life.

I would be more concerned about all the 60Hz stuff flying around your bed. Have you ever considered grounding, or as it is sometimes called, "earthing". Interesting concept, that has been proven to reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and other medical conditions. Several leading doctors are on board with trying to keep your body grounded as much as possible, but especially when asleep. The founder of the concept has written an interesting book on how he discovered grounding and all he went through to get it tested properly (double blind studies, etc.). As a retired radio systems engineer, I am not sure about it, but the author and the other doctors do make a strong case for being grounded while in bed. (Remember that there is 60Hz wiring all around your bed, not only the obvious external wiring to lamps, etc., but in the walls typically behind the bed.)

Point to some peer reviewed scientific studies that show this is an issue and perhaps you might have an audience. In a normal house, with normal wiring, this is not an issue.
There are enough real issues you have to deal with like getting used to your machine, using a mask, sleep hygiene etc...

Earthing...
Well, let's see...Yep. Woo.
- It's spreading on facebook.
- Dr. Oz is peddling it.
- It is expensive.
Ok, seriously. Let's do research. What is earthing?
Earthing- The idea that by developing an "electrical connection" to the earth, resulting in health benifits by providing the electrons a body needs and allowing the stabilization and modulation of the body's "electrical potential."
Ok... sounds "sciency." They used the words "electrons." And earth is good, and being grounded is good... and "grounding" is an electrical term...
Except that's not how electrons work. Yes, the human body contains electrons. So does everything else. And yes, electrons can be "displaced" causing positive and negative charges. And yes, you can be unbalanced when it comes to your electrons.
But there's a much more inexpensive & common solution to "fix" this imbalance. I'll even give you grounding method for free! Ready?
Go touch a metal doorknob.
Did you get shocked? Good. You're back in "balance." Did nothing happen? You were already "in balance. Scientists call it "Electrostatic discharge."
Everyone else calls it "Static Electricity." By touching the doorknob, you've "grounded" yourself and "re-balanced" your electrons.
Feel better?

Just thought I'd add one more point to my first post because you mentioned the copper wire in the heated hose. The modem is located on the motherboard in the machine so there is no real connection between modem and the hose connection that would be allowing cellular transmission energy to the hose. There are plenty of silicone seals in the humidifier connection so there is no conductor leading from machine to hose other than the intended electrical connection for the heated hose. The copper wire is encased in rubber/plastic coating much like insulation on a standard electrical wire albeit a slimmer coating on the hose, but at any rate the heating element in the hose is electrically insulated, and the hose at the mask end is a rubber connector to mask. Then the part of your mask that touches your face is silicone and the mask is plastic, so anything that is in contact with your handsome face is really very non-conductive so no real way to transmit any unwanted energy to your face/head from the the machine/hose/mask connection.
Now if you'll excuse me I have to go back to fashioning my foil hat

Krelvin,
I recommend that you read the information on the site I referenced earlier. For one, you will find links and downloads of numerous studies that have been published on earthing/grounding. There have been studies finding many benefits to a person being grounded as much as possible. Below is a direct link to several studies, and that are many more at other pages at the site.

As for a couple of your points, 1) don't know about Facebook, never have used it, 2) Dr. Oz did one 2 or 3 minute segment on his show a year or two ago, to my knowledge he has not mentioned it since (however, I do not watch it, only cherry pick show segments on his website, and 3) it is not expensive, in fact the best methods cost nothing. The best grounding is just walking barefoot outside in the yard or even better, walk on a beach in or near sea water. Grounding the bed does cost around $80 for a grounding mat that is connected via a small cable to the ground port that is on nearly every standard AC outlet.
As I mentioned previously, I am not totally sold on the concept, but after reading the original book, and some of the many studies and documents since, it does make me think that there may be something to it. To be honest, we grounded our bed a year or two ago with two grounding mats, and I cannot not say for sure that they have made any difference. However, I used to take Dilaudid (5-8 times stronger than morphine gram per gram) daily for chronic back pain. I do not take any now. Was that because of the mats? Probably not, but the mats are staying on the bed.
