asv machines
asv machines
Just completed my 3rd sleep study. Failed cpap & bipap Doc said I have central apnea and need asv machine. Have spent days researching on line and getting prices from two DEM (sticker shock), spoke to RT this morning for recommendations she said everybody's likes & dislikes regarding bells & whistles. I am self pay and was shocked at the price of asv machines! So, DEM is offering a used reconditioned Phillips Respronics 50 series. Looking for guidance. Is anyone using that style? He said it is 3 years old. Any caution buying a 3 yr old machine or reasons to purchase a more advanced up to date model. So happy I found this board as I journey down this new path it is wonderful to know there are others out there willing to provide support and encouragement. Thank you for any response it is appreciated.
Re: asv machines
How much are they wanting for the 50 series ASV? I assume that is the 950 model.
Have you looked at secondwindcpap.com and compared their prices?
The ResMed S9 Adapt would be the comparable machine in the ResMed line.
I have used both the Adapt and a model 960 machine (one model newer and the latest from Respironics)....some minor differences in how they do their job but for the most part none are deal breakers or makers.
The 60 series in the Respironics line has the integrated heated hose option..the 50 series does not. If that happens to matter to you.

Re: asv machines
I use the PR System One Model 50 ASV unit. It's one drawback is that it beeps like mad if the pressure can not be maintained. It means you need to either use a Q Tip head to muffle the beeper, or learn how to avoid large leaks from your mask.
Otherwise it is a great unit. It's allowing me to get a good night of sleep.

I also use the Respironics 950 model ASV and have no trouble with it. I've never used a ResMed machine.
Typically, a DME will charge you more for everything (machines, masks, hoses, etc.) than you can pay if you buy elsewhere. http://www.secondwindcpap.com is a good option for a reputable online dealer of lightly-used machines. Personally, I've had great luck finding good machines (for main use and backup) on CraigsList, but you do take your chances there.

Re: asv machines
Since you are buying out of pocket check out the units at http://www.secondwindcpap.com/ and compare prices for both the 950 and 960 or Resmeds ASV unit. You can also call them, they may have a new open box model that you want.
I took longer to type and I see BB has already pointed you in this direction so I will second it.

As always, Pugsy gives the best advice. I took a quick look at secondwindcpap.com and it seems like they have plenty of ASV machines available starting at about $1300 versus the $5400 list price and they do provide a warranty.
I also checked our host, cpap.com, because they have the best no-insurance prices but it looks like they don't normally carry AutoSV machines - all of those were "reference only". But you could phone them and ask if they can special order them and how much that would cost, if available. They are a great company to deal with.

Just a side note, be sure your sleep doctor or another doctor like a PCP will provide you with an Rx if you decide to blaze out on your own. Some doctors may balk at losing control of your therapy (and your business!)... so get that cleared first.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: asv machines
Thank you all for your replies. Still trying to navigate through all this information. The DME offered the Resp machine 50 series (that's all the info he gave me) for $300. The RT & Doc said a used machine would be ok. Don't know if I can overcome my uneasieness with something as important as breathing and buying second hand? I went to the website you recommended but do not see info for asv machines. Did get a price today for a new discounted asv $4600. One of you cautioned me so I am asking for more clarification, I do need the RT to set up my machine correct. Does it matter to her or Doc where I buy it, if she is going to be involved? The Doc gave her & I a copy of the settings. If there are only a few asv machines available shouldn't this be as simple as A or B? If I am in over my head and its not that simple I appreciate your honesty I don't want to make a costly mistake since I am borrowing the money from family to purchase this machine. Husband has been out of work for two years so things are reassess tight. Thank you again for your responses!
Re: asv machines
At secondwindcpap.com you have to know the model name/number of the various ASV machines.
The 50 series machine that your DME can sell you is model 950 and the 960 is the newer model.
PR System One BiPap AutoSV Advanced..model 950
PR System One BiPap 60 series AutoSV Advanced model 960
Ignore the term "Remstar" as it gets stuck on everything and means nothing.
In the ResMed machines...
S9 Adapt
either model 36037 or model 36007..the 36037 is slightly newer and has one extra feature but not critical (the 950 machine doesn't have auto epap either so it may not be a big deal for you)
In the ResMed line the newest is called the AirCurve 10 ASV but it is likely to be really pricey and it does the same thing as the 36037 does.
If buying used bugs you too much they do have some new open box specials.
http://www.secondwindcpap.com/Open_Box.html
scroll way down toward the bottom of the page...they are showing a PR System One model 960 for $1629 with humidifier
slightly above it is a model 950 for $1529 with humidifier
I don't see any new open box S9 Adapt machines
I think that second wind uses a little bit different terminology for the S9 Adapts they have and it can be confusing
in the used machine section they do have model 36007 and model 36037 but they also add in other words that make it difficult. The exact model name is S9 Adapt but you may also see it like this with the REF number being the model number.
and model 36037 for $1249

Re: asv machines
I think it is worth pointing out the PRS1 950 for $300 is a good deal, provided it doesn't have a huge number of hours on it, and has been kept out of a smoking environment. The machine has never been in contact with the patient, other than control knobs, and I would not worry about it being "infected" or a problem to use with new mask and hose. The 950 series does everything the 960 does, except it won't handle Respironics heated hose. You can use an aftermarket heated hose if you want like the one from Sleep Zone. I used a Sleepzone hose for 6 years with no problems.
I would take them up on this offer, and then start looking for a backup at your leisure. This is a good deal, and it sounds to me like they want to work with you.

A note, just so you know, the 950 really does have a flaw that if it fails to maintain the TIDAL VOLUME at the level it expects (due to a large leak or any other reason), then it will beep like there's no tomorrow. You can NOT turn it off. You can turn off all other alarms except that. Unfortunately, I have nights where my breathing is not what it should be. I really, really hate this machine those nights. That's when I want to throw it out my third story window!!!!!
Most people won't have a problem with this. But if you do encounter it, it requires stuffing the cut off tip of a QTip into the beeper hole to muffle the beeper. The 960 added the ability to silence this alarm.
But for $300 and a Qtip, you just can't go wrong with the 950. Not when the normal price is around $4,000 or more.
