AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
In the corner of the elbow of the mask are what look like two large ventilation holes. When the air is blowing, a lot of air is coming out of those holes and it feels like I'm not getting as much as I should in the mask. Is this normal behavior? Or should something be blocking that vent unless the air is turned off? Forgive my ignorance if this is a silly question--last night was my first experience with CPAP.

I've used the F10 for a little more than 6 months now. IMO what your experiencing is normal with the amount of air coming out of the vent, do NOT block the vent or try and plug it. As far as you feeling like your not getting enough air, Im currently exploring the same idea. For example my last titration was with a Nasal mask with a pressure of 13.0, however currently Im set at 14.2 and thinking about another 0.4. bump in pressure. The main reason for my bump in pressure is because of the amount of time spent in hypopnea apena.

I thought the vent holes were the little diffused holes around where the elbow fits into the mask.
The 2 bigger holes appear to be on the elbow itself.
I think those larger holes are the anti Asphyxia valve...see pages 11 and the last page that shows the diagram of all the pieces.

No air should be coming out of them when the mask is under pressure.

Are saying that NO air should be blowing out of the Elbow Vent when under normal operating (treatment) pressure?????Pugsy wrote:I thought the vent holes were the little diffused holes around where the elbow fits into the mask.

Because it blow out of mine like crazy when under pressure.....I assumed that was normal.

Are you sure that what you are feeling is coming from the anti asphyxia valve and not the vent holes around the elbow? It's in the same area.fdw wrote:Are saying that NO air should be blowing out of the Elbow Vent when under normal operating (treatment) pressure?????

My understanding of the valve is that when under pressure it should be closed. It's purpose is to open up and allow air exchange so that we don't re breathe too much of our own exhaled air should power loss occur and we don't wake up.

Re: AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
Yes, there is a constant stream of air blowing out of the elbow itself when pressure is on. I'm wondering if this is normal. The machine isn't reporting any large leaks, so maybe it is normal? The hose is pointed directly at the holes in the elbow and there's nothing blocking the holes, so some air is going through the holes and the rest is traveling to the mask.
Re: AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
100% positive.......maybe that's why my pressure is much higher than titration levels.Pugsy wrote:Are you sure that what you are feeling is coming from the anti asphyxia valve and not the vent holes around the elbow? Re: AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
The vent holes are right next to the elbow. I watched the video for cleaning and that's where they suggest using a toothbrush to clean out the tiny holes if they are blocked. The vent holes are tiny but they do encircle the elbow.
I am just going by the diagram I linked to above from the ResMed website...those 2 holes are for the AA valve and are not the vent holes.
Now I always thought that the anti asphyxia valve was or should be closed when pressure was within the circuit (machine blowing air).
Higher pressures would cause more air out the vent holes though...so maybe that is what is being felt at the elbow.

Re: AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
The exhaust port is a circle of tiny openings in the front of the mask. There should be air blowing out through the openings at all times the system is operating.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________
The anti-asphyxia valves are on the upper sides of the elbow. They should be closed with no air coming out or in when the system is working. When the system is not working, they should open to allow the air of breathing to move in and out.
If either of these valves is open while the CPAP process is running, your machine should register a large leak and your therapy may not be effective.

Yeah, I'm getting a stream of air coming out of the anti-asphyxia valve within the elbow itself while the system is running. There is no barrier between the valve openings and the air coming from the hose, so a lot of the air is blowing straight up and out the valve. It sounds like this shouldn't be happening, so I'll visit my provider and see about getting a replacement.

I've never had that mask to examine. How is the AA valve engineered to open and close?mptolman wrote:There is no barrier between the valve openings and the air coming from the hose
The AA valve on my mask has a flap that opens when the circuit is not operating. When the circuit is operating, the pressure inside the elbow forces the flap closed. When I turn my machine on, the flap can be heard making a tiny "slam-close" noise.

Re: AirFit F10 ventilation question - first night
mptolman and fdw, I'm pretty sure you're both wrong about the anti-asphyxiation holes, there's a little flap that should seal those when the blower is on, and then air comes out from the holes around where the elbow fits into the mask proper.
get a mirror and examine those holes *closely* while the machine is running, or, pop the elbow off the mask and put your thumb over the main opening, then turn on the cpap, the flap should close and no air should come out of it.

What do you mean? Are you saying Strangler has the descriptions reversed? I don't think so.palerider wrote:I'm pretty sure you're both wrong about the anti-asphyxiation holes

oh, no, I'll go back and clarify, I was referring to mptolman and fdw, strangler is 100% correct.ChicagoGranny wrote:What do you mean? Are you saying Strangler has the descriptions reversed? I don't think so.palerider wrote:I'm pretty sure you're both wrong about the anti-asphyxiation holes

yeah, unless someone has ripped off the flapper with over exuberant cleaning, it'll close and block off airflow from the AA holes.ChicagoGranny wrote:I've never had that mask to examine.
