SD card Rewrite

Post by MagsterMile » Fri Jul 31, 2015 5:21 am

I believe I have an error on SD card. The wording says: "Data Re-writing to SD Card, press yes to continue". Then two choices are given Yes of No.

Should I say 'yes' to re-write? Is it related to new Windows 10 which is now installed on my PC? The SD card itself is presently 'unlocked'.

Is the message from your CPAP machine or from the Windows 10 machine?
If it is from the CPAP, then you are observing the result of the Windows 10 machine writing a small file on the SD card which the Resmed CPAP doesn't like and needs to re-write the card to continue. If you want to continue to collect data from your CPAP, then answer "Yes".

This used to be a problem only with Mac computers but the Windows ones now do a similar thing. Unlike the Respironics CPAP machines which utilize an actual file structure on the SD card, the ResMed CPAPs utilize a pseudo file structure where all the files and directory structures are exactly where the CPAP firmware needs them to be, which if left undisturbed is recognized by both the desk top computers and the CPAP. If anything changes in the structure, the ResMed CPAP gets annoyed and wants to restore it to the "pristine" form it requires. That is why good practice is to "lock" the SD card whenever removing it from the CPAP and then "unlock" it before reinstalling it into the CPAP. this will prevent, in most cases, this problem from occurring.

If the message is coming from the Windows 10 machine, the I have no clue since I only have a Windows 7.1 machine that I use for CPAP data.

I haven't yet responded to the cpap machine request that I answer yes or no. A little while I put the card in the pc (with it locked) and tried downloading to pc SH. No last night's data came over to PC.

So yesterday (30th), I ran the SD card on my PC as usual and the data copied over to SH. The little file was probably written over to the card as you suggested since I didn't lock the card first. Windows 10 self installed on my PC on the 29th. I was wrong not to get in the habit of locking the sd card before loading to SH before. Now I will be sure to lock the card first, do the download, unlock card when I put it back in the PC.

I appreciate your help in understanding this problem.

I can not tell which files I need to delete before returning to my machine. I always get the data rewrite error even if I'm positive that the card is locked and that I eject before removal.

Depends on what your computer runs on... However if it's writing to a locked card, then your card reader is defective, and not sensing the lock tab.

If you put the card in your pc unlocked

Open a cmd prompt

Change to the sd Card eg F:

Then cd “System Volume Information”
Then del *
Then cd ..
The rmdir “System Volume Information”

Then eject the card

Your resmed machine will then be happy with the card. In future lock the sd card before putting it in your pc

Windows is writing that file to the card even when it's locked.

I can get the file inside the system volume information folder to delete, but I can't get windows to remove the folder (rmdir) It says it can't find it. I even googled and used different switches (-h I think) to no avail. It's as if dos simply can't see hidden files even when I set the folder options to show them.

Registered just to add a "me too".

It started happening a while after installing Win10, so not sure if it's due to an update. I've used the same card, card reader, and same PC in the past without issues. It's happened twice before today (but I don't regularly download data - only when curious), so I thought it was just me forgetting to flip the tab or not flipping it all the way.

I'll try to better isolate the problem over the next week, but clearly Windows is writing to the drive. I'll see if I have the same issues with deleting those temp files and if there's a way around it.

I found a system volume information folder. I can convince windows to delete the file inside, but not the folder itself. Windows writes this even with write protection on. SD card gets re-written every time I put it back in my machine :( Guess this is just what I have to deal with if I want to read my own data.

I was able to use windows cmd rmdir “System Volume Information” to remove the folder then immediately eject the SD card or just let the S9 reformat the card and rewrite the summary data, you now have the detailed data in sleepyhead, and the S9 only keeps 7days of detailed data anyway

Thanks for the link. Yeah, a quick check confirms what that thread says. But, I was thinking more along the lines of throwing together a bat or ps1 to delete the offending files and immediately eject the card, and seeing if that stubborn folder would mess that up. Or if there's a registry value that can be set based on the Volume ID, or something. Might be messy because I think some of those values change if the reader changes. I dunno, we'll see.
