Resmed Airsense 10 Woes

Post by hpm08161947 » Thu Jul 30, 2015 8:36 am

My wife had a Resmed Aircurve for 17 days. The DME called and told her that she needed to swap the machine for and Airsense 10. I wondered what was going on, so I took the machine back for her and questioned the swap, it appeared to be a simple mistake on their part, since she was not diagnosed for a Bipap. So last night I hooked up the Airsense 10 for her and turned it on, it immediately started to spray water, I turned it off and checked the humidifier water level and it was fine. I called the DME this morning and got the feeling that they did not know what was going on, which did not surprise me, But they did give me a few things to try..... maybe they will work. I just wonder it anyone knows what could cause an airsense 10 to start spraying water?

Immediate spraying of water when a machine is turned on tells me that water was/is in the hose somewhere for some reason.
I am not familiar with the construction of the AirSense humidifier but with my S9 if I fill the water chamber just a little too full the air blowing over the water will blow water into the hose and I get lots of noise and water in my face.

The AirSense and AirCurve machines have identical humidification systems and water chambers.
I don't know how easy it is for those machines to blow water into the hose from just a little overfilling of the chamber...but that would be my first suspect when someone says "immediate water in the hose". There's simply no time for condensation to develop.

Either that or water was maybe still in the hose from maybe washing the hose????

The water level was at it's absolute max. This morning I lowered it to 1/3 full and the problem disappeared. I was particularly concerned last night because the machine would not come back on, but after sitting all night with the humidifier removed, all seems to be well. Thanks

BTW.... all the setting changes suggested by the DME were completely off base, glad I use CPAPTALK.

I don't have one but the illustration in the user guide shows a fill line that has little arrows above the line. I suspect that the mas fill is just below the bottom of the fill line. The manual states the max volume is 380 mL so if you can find a container that is marked in mL, it should be possible to measure before filling the chamber. On my PR System One machine the max fill is 325 mL and I have found water bottles that hold that amount exactly. It simplifies guessing whether or not I'm holding the chamber level or not and risking an over-fill.

The settings you should use are the ones on the doctor's prescription and not any suggestion via the DME at least until you are comfortable in managing your own therapy.

There's probably a fine line between max fill and where the air going over the water will take some water with it into the hose like with my S9. If that is the case as long as you don't use up all the water during the night it doesn't hurt to fill it to less than maximum each night.

Water just in the hose shouldn't have affected the machine turning on or off though. It's noisy and annoying but just in the hose shouldn't have got over to the electronics stuff.

Interesting to note that you are the first with the AirSense to complain of this happening (at least that I have heard of) so perhaps it is more like the S9 in this regard than we originally thought.

With mine, if it's over-filled, whatever is over the line gets sucked into the hose (if it's turned on without the mask on so that the air comes out full-speed). So if the water level was fine after this, it was probably over-full before, and the excess water got sucked into the hose. I use a full-size instead of a slimline hose, so this may contribute.

The full line is the line with the arrows, but it's the line itself, not the top of the arrows. I always fill mine to a few mm below the line, the only reason to go all the way up is if it's running out of water during the night, but to start out, I'd probly even just start at the line below the fill line.

Also, if it got bumped or tilted, that may have caused water to go into the line.
