Please help with my sleep study results

Post by taupok » Wed Jul 29, 2015 9:12 am

Hello everyone!

This is my first post, and as mentioned I've just gotten my sleep study results.

First off, I did the sleep study because I thought I had Sleep Apnea. I'd inhale, hold my breath and slowly exhale over a long period of time >10s, and my wife
says I snore and held my breath in my sleep. My main concern was actually that I'd always been tired the next morning and it's ruining my lifestyle (Not so much not breathing at night) Even a 2 hour nap in the afternoon doesn't help.

So, I went to see an ENT specialist, and he recommended a sleep study (Duh ) Prior to the study he was already sceptical that I would have OSA, mainly because preliminary physical examination (scope through the nasal passage etc) would rule out that I was a highly unlikely candidate for OSA. Also, I am 29 yrs old, my BMI is 22, and I don't have enlarged tonsils or a big tongue.

Anyways, so the results are as follows:

AHI-0.8
RDI-15.5
ODI-0.2
REM Stage-21.6% in REM

Except for RDI, all the other results were normal. So the Doctor concluded that I had a good night sleep and no OSA. Even though I woke up feeling much more tired than any other nights. He prescribed me a nasal spray as I had abit of congestion in my right nostril but nothing too serious. He recommended me to sleep in an elevated position.

I really don't think the nasal spray is going to improve my situation.
What do you think? HELP.

Well, I can't provide an answer, perhaps someone else here can. Do I think something is going on, yes. Do I think it is classic sleep apnea, no. You have a summary report, you should request the total report, I hear they are 5-6 pages. There should/might also be a video of you sleeping that might be useful for you to watch. Something is disturbing your sleep and personally I have no idea what it is. Perhaps showing these results to your GP to look for other than sleep apnea causes might be useful
Sleeping MUCH better now

I would take that sleep study report to a doctor who understands what it means to have a Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI) in the Mild-Moderate range (15 is the upper limit of the Mild range). Your sleep is being disturbed by a respiratory issue at least 15 times per hour. Usually the disturbance is an episode of increased respiratory effort that culminates in an arousal (RERA) -- a sort of micro-awakening. Under the circumstances your symptoms make sense. You didn't qualify for a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea but you do have sleep disordered breathing, and that RDI could qualify you for a diagnosis of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) and might also qualify you (under your insurance) for a trial of CPAP. A copy of the full report is always a good idea if you don't already have it, but you don't need a video of your sleep.
