Nighttime toilet trips

Post by OldBaldDave » Sat Jul 25, 2015 11:31 pm

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else needs more toilet trips to wee at night while using cpap, like last night I was up three times, seems counter productive as my sleep is disturbed.

Sleepyhead data indicates I must respond to the call of nature about 6 times per night. Using the Airfit P10 mask, which slips on and off in seconds and using autosense on the A10 machine, I didn't know I was having so many breaks, but they are only for about 2 minutes each. Before I got the Airsense 10 CPAP machine and was using the Phillips Respironics Autoset, I was probably getting up about every hour and not getting to sleep for many hours. The first night on the A10, I don't recall having to get up at all, but that was short-lived. I suppose it depends on the timing of your water intake. I drink a lot of water at night and before I go to bed, and every time I get up, so I suppose I am reaping what I am sowing.

I think your night time trips to the bathroom have more to do with your fluid intake than your cpap. I don't drink anything after about 6 pm, otherwise I would be up several times in the night. If you drink a lot of fluids in the evening you are bound to have to use the facilities more during the night! I am 76 and am usually up once in the night -sometimes twice. I think that has to do with my age.

My trips reduced went down to one a night when using CPAP. Try not to drink too much before bed, but don't make yourself dehydrated. I was in hospital two weeks ago for severe dehydration and it wasn't fun, it took FOUR goes before they could find a vein in one of my arms, otherwise they were going to try my legs. It really hurt and my arm is still sporting the bruises.

And of course investigate other reasons (in men only) for your nocturia that have nothing to do with OSA.

Before cpap, I made 4 to 5 trips a night to the bathroom. After Cpap, I rarely have to get up during the night.

Before cpap, I too had 2 or 3 trips to the bathroom at night. Since cpap, rarely get up to go. I do drink plenty of water, even at night and it hasn't affected my sleep. If I do wake up and get back to sleep quickly, I don't have to go. But, if not getting back to sleep, the urge to go gets stronger.

CPAP has reduced/eliminated my trips.

What is your machine? If it has data you can check the times you get up to see if you still have events.
Apnea events trigger the kidneys to produce urine. For most of us the toilet trips at night reduced to zero or one once our therapy was dialed in.

If your AHI ad O2 levels are good you need to talk to your doctor about this issue because your OSA was hiding this problem.

I agree. See your doctor.
In most cases, cpap therapy REDUCES those extra trips to the potty.
You don't have to be an old guy for stuff "down there" to go wrong.
The quicker you fix it, the less needs fixing.

Thanks for all the replies, I've freshly shaved, tightened mask a tad, hopefully eliminating leaks.

Most importantly stopped fluids at 6pm and I only got up once. So fingers crossed this works regularly
