Under chin masks?

Post by alpha752 » Sun Jul 26, 2015 3:14 pm

I am in a desperate search to find a full face mask that works for me. The Amara View I had high hopes for, but it's not working out. I am using a F&P Simplus (I think) now and it's ok. It seems to be a problem that I tend to open my mouth pretty wide when I sleep. Often I wake to find the bottom of the mask like inside my mouth because it's open. Do you think one of the masks that kind of go under the chin would be helpful?

I'm trying to find SOMETHING that lets me wear it for more than 3 hours a night.

You need a chinstrap to keep your mouth closed.

A soft cervical collar will do nicely. It will keep your chin up after you go to sleep and your facial muscles relax.

This is the brand I use. Size will depend on the distance between your chin and collar bone while you are on your back and relaxed. Length is controlled by your neck size.

I found that a cervical collar (soft, from any drug store) does a better job of keeping my jaw from dropping than a chin strap. For me, the chin strap still allowed my jaw to fall backwards and open which is a bad position for apnea sufferers.

The chin cup was helpful for me. I tried the Hybrid FFM with nasal pillows and it was like training wheels. A nice thing about the hybrid is that it contains 3 sizes of mouth cushions and 3 sizes of nasal pillows. Lots of ways to get just the right fit.

To answer your question, you might look into the F&P Flexifit 432. It fits under the chin and will work with someone with a beard as well.

The Flexifit 431 is good... never tried the 432. Also look into the Forma.

Thanks! I don't know if I could handle a c-collar, but I suppose it's something to consider. I have tried chin straps in the past and they are very uncomfortable how they push your jaw back.

I think a chin strap would help, as I have a fat face, and between my mouth opening, and my cheeks blowing out with pressure, I get leaks at the corners of my mouth and around my chin. This is very frustrating.

Curious. You asked for recommendations and then ignored the ones that provided suggestions on full faced masks that met your requirements? What was the point in asking?

Checking the reviews of the masks on the CPAP website, only 1 review was positive for the use of this mask within the last year. All of the others were negative.

So what made you choose that mask?

Mainly because of the metal railing around my loft bed, (at least right now) I roll around a lot in bed (hitting my face and leaving a bruise a few times) and with a more rigid mask I am concerned with doing damage to it by unwittingly rolling into my roll. Though if while on CPAP I find I don't roll as much I might think of a different one.

Wrap some kind of padding around the railing... may not keep the mask in place, but could help prevent breakage (of the mask or your face!).

It seems like they can make a under chin mask for peramedics to use with oxygen, and oxygens maskes for under $10.00. But soon as it comes to cpap or bipap masks, the prize goes up and they tell up to try a strap to hold your mouth shut. Just be cause the most of us are over 50yrs old, Or on medcare.

The paramedic masks are disposables, so cost is negligible. You want keepers for Cpap and they cost a lot more (which is not to say the co's selling them couldn't do it somewhat cheaper of course!).
