Nine months on CPAP - AHI 1.0 - too much sleep???

Post by Tassie Devil » Sun Jul 05, 2015 7:12 pm

8.3 hours last night, one of the longest for some time, but woke up dopey and am being very slow to wake up.

I'm posting this because I gather from the many posts on this excellent board, I'm not Robinson Crusoe. CPAP does not always produce a "miracle".

Those of us on CPAP are there because we have been diagnosed with sleep apnea so in theory we should feel better. But my take is it can take a very long time for the brain to re-adjust after a lifetime (in my case 79 years) of bad sleep. And there could be other causes. In my case an irregular heart beat was discovered 3 months ago so I've now been fitted with a dual chamber pace maker - yet another physiological change for the old brain to accommodate. Again it is common belief this should make one feel better and in my case this is partially true, but has not produced a new invigorated male. Old age can be debilitating!

On the CPAP front I feel I'm definitely better off with the ResMed Autoset than with the previous Escape and gave up on a full face mask because of the difficulty of leaks but after careful strap adjustment have the nasal mask so it can go through the night with a complete seal.

Bottom line is I'm resigned to using CPAP for the rest of my life and do strongly advise others, who might be experiencing difficulties, to persevere. Without CPAP we are not getting enough oxygen at times during sleep and that is BAD. It can trigger other problems. We are all different so there is no "one cure fits all" available to fix all difficulties but at least CPAP eliminates one of them.

Do not deride the idiots of this world as they make the rest of us look so much better :-) BUT, avoid being an idiot yourself and PERSIST WITH CPAP.
