Skin discoloration from cpap

Post by rmiles » Fri Jul 03, 2015 8:58 pm

My little girl is 7 years old and has sleep
Apnea. She has been using her machine for about 2 months. The area where her mask fits has discolored her skin making the entire area lighter in complexion. What could this be coming from and what do I need to do to fix it?

After talking to her doctor consider using a liner for the mask.

As others have said, the first step is to check with the doctor. We don't have a lot of experience with child cpap users.

However, I will also mention that there are many different kinds of mask and your DME (Durable Medical Equipment) provider might be able to find a mask that works better for your child. For example, I use this nasal pillow mask and it only contacts the bottom of my nose and the back of my head: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/purita ... rface.html

Finding the right mask to connect each person to their cpap machine is the hardest and most individual part of the whole process. What works wonderfully for one person can be a nightmare for another. This is where a good DME can be very helpful by allowing your child to try many different masks of different types to find out which one works best for them.

I wish you good luck in finding one that works!

I agree that a liner is likely the best way to go - see Padacheek.com for them.

hmm, wonder if the hit and run guest is washing the mask with bleach, and not rinsing it well enough.

Bleach sold in some countries is so watered down, that when folks finally get the good American stuff,
they use it STRAIGHT! I've seen huge white areas on carpeting in apartments recently vacated by
new immigrants who probably had no idea.
