Dr. Stephen Y. Park podcast on dental devices
Dr. Stephen Y. Park podcast on dental devices
This podcast ("The 7 Reasons Why I Like Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea") was actually pretty interesting, the positive half of the story on dental appliance use for sleep apnea. The other half of the story is still coming, the "con" side, but it'll most likely be along soon. After listening to it, I thought that Dr. Park, as a practicing sleep doctor, has lots of useful practical experience, and is sensitive to his patients concerns. I enjoyed this podcast, since I'm not really up on oral appliance use.
I found this one by searching for "Steven Y. Park, MD" on iTunes, and found the "Breathe Better, Sleep Better, Live Better" series of podcasts available for free downloading. I may listen to others, but you can subscribe to these podcasts, then you'll hear about it when new ones are added. Since I listen to podcasts while I'm taking my morning walk, these fit right in.
Thought this might be of interest to others.

Dr. Park posts a column with the pros and other with the cons on each thing he discusses. On the last one, he says, "This is a continuation of my love/hate, pro/con blog posts about various sleep apnea tests and treatment options." Is he still doing podcasts? If so, I must have slipped off his email notification list. I used to listen to them live, with the option of submitting questions, and found them interesting.palerider wrote:he's been the epitome of wishywashyness lately: http://doctorstevenpark.com/sleep-apnea-blogRogerSC wrote:This podcast ("The 7 Reasons Why I Like Oral Appliances for Sleep Apnea") was actually pretty interesting, the positive half of the story on dental appliance use for sleep apnea. I didn't realize he was so I thank Roger for letting us know about the dental appliance one. I think it is great he provides both sides of an issue as isn't this what we are begging doctors to do instead of providing a one size fits all type of deal? And by the way, regarding dental appliances, he mentions that good nasal potency is important which is what the sleep medicine dentist from the defunct ASAA board kept stressing.

I assumed that you were joking, despite the lack of indications of humor...If he didn't give both pro's and con's, I wouldn't be interested, personally...more like a sales pitch then. What he does is present the pro's and con's, and then you can make an informed choice. He doesn't have an agenda that I've seen yet, other than to give people choices, and helping them to understand what the pluses and minuses of each choice is.palerider wrote: he's been the epitome of wishywashyness lately: http://doctorstevenpark.com/sleep-apnea-blog

Not sure what wishy-washyness has to do with presenting both sides of issues. I consider that good style.

I suppose I was hoping for more of a "in my experience with patients, this is what I can recommend, based on my observations of the pluses and minuses" an expert opinion, as it were.RogerSC wrote:Not sure what wishy-washyness has to do with presenting both sides of issues. Re: Dr. Stephen Y. Park podcast on dental devices
I see...that would make sense to me if he was one-on-one with you, and had your experiences and sleep data at hand. Part of the point that I was hearing in the podcast was that no one answer works for everyone, you have to try stuff to find what works for you. So he lays out what he has seen as the issues with oral appliances through practical experience working with his patients. He also gave a good idea about the cost range for oral appliances, so you have an idea about what you're risking...I was left with some questions, like what does Medicare think about these, and what if it doesn't work out for me, will they still buy me a new cpap when I need one if they've already bought me an oral appliance to try.palerider wrote:I suppose I was hoping for more of a "in my experience with patients, this is what I can recommend, based on my observations of the pluses and minuses" an expert opinion, as it were.RogerSC wrote:Not sure what wishy-washyness has to do with presenting both sides of issues. This would be research left to the listener (me *smile*)...most likely insurance company is currently a moving target (he mentions that this has been changing in the last few years), subject to change and perhaps even how you approach it with your insurance company.

"Con" side: Re: Dr. Stephen Park podcast on dental devices
Okay, the next half, the reasons why oral appliances may not work, has arrived:
8 Reasons Why Oral Appllances May Not Work for You
Same bat channel, same bat time...found it for download on iTunes, "Breathe Better, Sleep Better, Live Better" podcasts again.
