Mouthguard for a Chomper?

Post by OldLincoln » Fri Jul 03, 2015 3:14 pm

I cannot keep from chomping chunks out of my cheeks while sleeping and the loud "SNAP" and resulting blood flow over the years has to stop. Today I ordered the "Vital Sleep" mouth guard which is supposed to keep my lower jaw forward. It has a money back thing if I don't like it and have chosen the "Eliminator Pro" as second choice. I have to get something to protect my cheeks and figured one of these should help with apnea also worn under my full face P&F Simplex mask. Any experience out there?

Maybe unrelated to your exact situation, but good oral hygiene helps, at least with the healing after you have been bitten.
And a healthy bump for the question others can answer.

Have you been check or diagnosed with TMJ problems? I have TMJ problems and use a custom-made TMJ oral appliance / nightguard along with my CPAP mask. Everyone's mouth is different and one made specifically for you by a dentist who is experienced in treating TMJ problems (whether that is what you have or not) would be where I would go for the oral appliance/ nightguard. Mine makes it easier for me to get to sleep with CPAP but does not replace use of CPAP equipment.

Thanks for the replies so far.
1. I'm big on oral hygiene, Chunky, especially with mouth wounds. I'm over 70 and never had a cavity and teeth are solid. I manage the bite wounds with Listerine and salt plus Cank-Aid when needed.

2. Glad you're still around Jim! No false teeth or they'd be out for sure. I've even had the dentist take off the sharp edges on some that seem to grow like rabbits teeth do. I use a fingernail file to dull the front ones occasionally. This is what I'm hoping the mouth piece will fix.

3. Beautiful cat Maryland.... No TMJ thank God. My wife does occasionally think I have some kind of jaw issue as she never knows what's gonna come out of my mouth as I get older. Says I misplaced my couth somewhere along the way. For me I spent over 50 years with diplomatic speak but now I'm retired dammit.

I bite the end of my tongue in my sleep. I use the cheap youth guard things from Walmart. I mold one for the top and one for the bottom. I chew through them in a few weeks and they are easy and cheap to replace. At least I don't chew though my tongue.

Yeah I thought about that Stormy. My concern is that I an a genetic insomniac and take sleep meds. If I chewed through on I may choke to death and not wake up. The thing I just bought is hinged at the back and I don't think it can be dangerous.

I replace mine before they get dangerously close to coming apart. It works for me.

A wrap up.....
I received my "Vital Sleep" mouth guard used it even awake and reading to get used to it and adjusted the jaw forward. However it didn't work for me.

1. The principle is to pull to lower jaw forward by shortening the distance between the back lower teeth and the upper front teeth like a vice putting all the pressure on the upper front. With the jaw adjusted forward past a point the upper slipped off the teeth in my sleep. The high price fitted devices (Somnodent) apply the pressure throughout the teeth and don't slip out. My son uses one and loves it - so does his family.

2. That aside, I thought it would improve my AHI but only made it worse. The first night with the jaws pretty much even went from 5.58 the night before to 11.9. Adjusting over the next several nights brought it almost back to the 5.5 range then last night it was 14.9. I figure the last adjustment stressed it too much and it came off the top teeth jamming my mouth. As the Myth=Busters would say I call this device "Busted" for my use.

I got my full refund RMA and it's packaged ready to send back. All reports say they are good about that as they know it won;t work for everybody. So now I guess I look at a sport mouth piece to cover my lower sharp teeth and hopefully stop the bleeding from chomps. I'll be talking with my VA docs to see if they can give me the Somnodent or similar but that takes a while to get through. Since I have a CPAP they may not agree but as they say "The answer is always no until you ask."

I LIKE THIS ONE. It has a plastic buffer welded onto the outer face which is specifically designed to stop bite-thru. It works as claimed. PM me for fitting tips if you so desire.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
