Increased noise on inhalation.

Post by Jackiep » Thu Jul 02, 2015 9:02 am

I have been testing this machine for almost two months and am now ready to purchase. Lately I have become more aware of increased noise in the machine on inhalation...at least I think the noise is coming from the machine ...it is not a leak type noise. Last night it actually kept me awake...of course the more aware I am of it the more it bothers me. Is it normal to have this increased noise on inhalation ? Thanks for any input.

Where is the noise coming from - front, back, hose, mask, humidifier, etc. etc?

It is not coming from the hose or mask....seems to be in the machine ... can't determine exactly where. Of course the machine makes a constant purr when in use (not loud)....the purr just increases substantially on inhalation.

Have you talked to the DME or brought the machine in?

This may not be it, but - my totally different machine, with differently named settings, does something similar. The setting that is my expiratory relief means that the fan drive noise goes down a little bit because the fan slows down a little bit (lower pressure) during each exhalation. I believe that your machine's Aflex works similarly. So, to me, it's not that it is "more" noise on inhalation, it's that there is "less" noise on exhalation - does that make sense?

That certainly does make sense...I have a call in to the technician now ...we will see if he concurs. Thanks

the fans on the machines do change speed breath by breath, they're trying to maintain a desired pressure, either a slightly changing one with epr or *flex, or a constant one with those off. when you inhale and exhale, the fan has to change speed to maintain the pressure against the changing airflow, so even with a fixed pressure, the fan will speed up when you inhale, and slow down as you exhale, thus maintaining pressure.

most folks get used to the noise after a bit... then it becomes an old friend, and when it changes in some way, you gotta get used to that...
