It's probably bedbugs. They say they have a sweet smell. I'd call an exterminator. Burn all your sheets, and bathe a lot.

When I take off my mask I smell oranges and love it. I also use an orange based wipe to clean my mask daily so I am pretty sure that is what I am smelling. When at the sleep lab I smelled the silicone the mask is made with which gives off a plastic like smell. I have had serious sinus issues in the past and have a high sense of smell. HTH

I experience this, too, and just assumed it was my hair. I figured that I become nose-blind to the scent of my shampoo and hair products since my hair is hanging beside my face all day. But after breathing filtered air all night, my brain forgets my hair scent. When I take the mask off, I suddenly smell it for a few seconds.

that makes sense, you've been breathing air from several feet away from your hair, not necessarily that it's *filtered* just that it's remote... so any scents would be much weaker.

you could try a different scented shampoo as a test and report back...

Maybe it is the sweet smell of animal farts. A friend on CPAP with lots of animals which sleeps in his bedrooms tells me he sucks up the animal farts all night long. Yuck. I don't know why he does it. I'd kick those animals out. LOL.

that 'sweet smell' is what you smell like normally, but you spend the night breathing air being pulled in from a distance away from the scents of your clothes and bedding, so your nose forgets about it.

when you take the mask off, you're hit with the close up smell for a while, until your nose becomes numb to it.

it's the same as people (typically women) who marinate themselves in perfume, then waft through their day making eveyrbody around them nearly pass out, but they themselves can't smell it.

Who ever said it smells like ironed clothes you nailed it, that's exactly what I smell when I take my mask off in the morning. Just for a minute but definitely weird...

That's the smell of the hand/tentacle sanitizer that Pugsy's aliens use during their nightly abductions. Now that you've mentioned it, they'll do a more thorough mind wipe and you won't notice it any more.

I find that CPAP pressure causes swelling and congestion in my nose to go away temporarily. Maybe your sense of smell is temporarily a little more sensitive after taking off the mask. When I started taking allergy shots, I kept thinking my car had something wrong because I'd smell burning oil every time I stopped at a red light. I finally realized I was smelling all the oil that cars drip on the road when stopped at red lights.

The idea of breathing air from wherever your CPAP machine is sitting also make some sense. During normal breathing, you're smelling the scents of your own body and that probably somewhat deadens your sense of smell. Getting away from your own smells may make you smell things differently.

Most cleaning products I use are unscented--just because so many artificial
(and some natural) fragrances burn my nasal passages.
I use a tiny amount of essential oil on a cotton ball in a SS olive dish next to the intake
to make my machine air more pleasant

Me thinks that is the smell of dust in the air. Your brain will get used to it.

change your sheets, or nightwear.

you're smelling what's around your head when you remove the mask, instead of what's near the air intake on the machine.

take the mask off, you get a new concentration of odors, which your nose then tunes out after a bit.
