oxygen concentrator ?

Post by wyonel » Mon Jun 29, 2015 5:58 pm

Presently I am using a rental Ever Flo oxygen concentrator from Respironics. Any thoughts pro or con about renting versus buying or brand? I only use it at night with my bipap Resmed Air Curve 10 VPAP.

I think it depends on where you are located and what your insurance will pay for or not.
If you are paying out of pocket and plan on staying around a good long time, buying will be cheaper. If your insurance will pay all or most, then do what they offer. If you only plan to use it a few months, rental would be better.

be sure to refer to it as an oxygen CONCENTRATOR... it's not a generator... there are oxygen generators, but that's a whole different thing...

we bought one, the respironics everflow q is good, the Invacare Perfecto is also good.

be sure to get one that has the o2 quality monitor so you know it's working.

Palerider, thanks for the correction. To the others the oxygen concentrator was prescribed.

The balance to be drawn is one of cost. For example, the Everflo Q with oxygen level indicator can be obtained by outright purchase for about $700 - that's what I paid a few months ago. If you rent long term, I think (check with your insurance company to see what your policy says) that the rental is perpetual with no final purchase point like CPAP machines.

So divide your co-pay into $700 and see how many months of rental add up to $700.
Add into the mix, any included maintenance that comes with rental and off-set that with the five year warranty from Respironics. If you rent and something happens, your DME is likely to be able to deliver a replacement that same day while your machine is being repaired. If you own, turnaround time will be longer.

BTW my local DME will not provide any service on oxygen equipment it does not provide as rental and won't sell outright.
It's a complex question.

I decided to purchase and assume the insurable risk of paying for a replacement delivered by overnight from my mail order supplier while my unit is being repaired. I'm betting that my unit will last the full five years at which point I'll just buy a new one even if the first one is still operating satisfactorily and move the original unit to backup status.

Your circumstances and oxygen need may be significantly different from mine. My insurance company is not in the mix for me.

You get a recording pulse oximeter and monitor you O2 saturation level over a period of time (days or weeks) and present the results to your doctor, who will write a prescription if you have enough desaturations below 88%.

Somewhere I have read that a total time of five minutes or more in one night below 88% SpO2 level.

I don't remember what the length of a night was. I also don't remember if that was on CPAP or on room air alone.
