Looking For a Little Help

Post by sleepyirishguy » Fri May 29, 2015 12:42 pm

Greetings to all!
I'm new to this board, but not new to having apnea.
I was diagnosed sometime back around 2009, and it was a diagnosis of "severe". The woke me up very early on during my sleep study to put me on the CPAP.
I don't remember the exact numbers but it was something crazy like I stopped breathing 75 times every 30 minutes.
After 18 months I'd gone through 2 CPAP machines...and by that I mean I had gone through having them adjusted each to their highest settings. After about two weeks I would be snoring right through the face mask. As you can guess I've given up on the CPAP, and I was told by my physician at the time that surgery was not an option.
Then I ran into an old friend who had a similar problem, and he suggested smoking marijuana as a means to get better sleep. I was hesitant at first but gave it a try and it did work. I've slept like a baby for the past 6 years without any issues.
Recently though, I've quit smoking cigarettes and as a result, the marijuana as well. It's now coming up on 5 months and that old sleepy/hazy/foggy feeling is now with me throughout my day. I'm afraid if it goes on I'll be back to the point I was before where I would literally fall asleep in mid conversation, and at it's worst I'll suffer from hallucinations.
So, with my past experience with the CPAP I've been reluctant to approach my doctor.
Does anybody know of any other possible solutions?
Thanks for reading!

Lol!
I quit smoking cigarettes so I thought it would be counter productive to keep smoking weed. And there were some work related concerns as well.
I never smoked just to get high. I only smoked a very little bit maybe an hour before I planned on going to sleep.
I sure did work though.

Instead of smoking why don't you try drinking Cannabidiol (CBD) or Elipsia which are given to children with Epileptic seizures?

Hi - whatever the reason Cpap didn't work for you originally, we can very probably help... so often it's the 'wrong' mask, wrong size, bad fitting, etc. plus your machine may well not have been set to the proper level for you to benefit from Cpap (happens all the time!) so if you know what the settings were, and know what they should have been (did you get a copy of the sleep study results?) we can advise how to tweak things so you can get decent sleep. Can you provide the full name and model # of your machine (whatever is on the top plus whatever is on the bottom - please don't just say 'Resmed auto" because that applies to a hundred models) plus what type of masks you have and a detailed explanation about why they didn't work, hrs. of sleep nightly, meds you're on, etc. etc... we'll do our best to get you back on the hose and feeling better.

I'm surprised smoking pot puts you to sleep. Try a better strain.
Morbius, are you bored?

I second Julie's idea -- what if you give PAP therapy another try with some help from the experienced folks here. Do you still have either of the two machines you mentioned earlier?
