Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
I recently discovered that my ResMed System One was resetting the humidifier temperature to 3 randomly.
Is that a CPAP fault or a humidifier fault do you think?
Thanks.

He probably meant "Remstar", only one on the myriad names used by companies to befuddle us.

the only reason I point things like that out is that if you, for instance, called up someone and asked for advice, they might give you the completely wrong thing... for a resmedpikov22 wrote:Oops! my *guess* is that it'd be in the control module in the cpap, not in the humidifier... but that's nothing more than a guess.
it also could be because of iffy connections, try removing and replacing the humidifier half a couple times, to make sure the contacts between the two units are clean and making good connection, and you might consider opening up the blower and making sure the connections in there are good too, there's been a lot of reports of bad connections where the wires plug onto the board. a number of threads about that here.

Re: Troubleshooting
Thanks anyway. As this is an intermittent problem and the device is never moved, I doubt that it has anything to do with contacts.palerider wrote:my *guess* is that it'd be in the control module in the cpap, not in the humidifier... but that's nothing more than a guess.

that's why I suspect the contacts.pikov22 wrote:Thanks anyway. As this is an intermittent problem and the device is never moved, I doubt that it has anything to do with contacts.
electrical plug contacts such as used between the circuit board and wiring, and between the two machine halves can develop resistance if they aren't of high quality, and the ones in the resprionics machines are not.
I used to have a job doing rework on IBM mainframe computer boards, and they had strict specifications as to the spring tension used in the connectors, so that the metal to metal connection was "gas tight" and wouldn't let air in between the pin and the spring that pressed against it, because over time, the air would slightly oxidize the connections, and it would cause faults.
the act of plugging and unplugging helps to clean the contacts, making a better electrical connection.

Re: Troubleshooting
HOWEVER, if oxidation builds up between contacts, the resulting high resistance path would eventually become a permanent fault.palerider wrote:that's why I suspect the contacts.pikov22 wrote:Thanks anyway. hence the 'reseating' to help remove the oxidation.pikov22 wrote:HOWEVER, if oxidation builds up between contacts, the resulting high resistance path would eventually become a permanent fault.palerider wrote:the act of plugging and unplugging helps to clean the contacts, making a better electrical connection.
*shrugs* do what you want.. if you'd rather not pop the two halves apart, and snap them back together (a 2 second job) that's perfectly fine.
contact accurate biomed, or the user 'accurate' here on the forum, they repair those machines, and may know what's going on, or be able to give you a quote for repair.

Pikov, you're assuming all conditions aside from movement are static. You're neglecting variable circuit conditions that could be brought about by normal machine operation, turning the machine off and on, fluctuations in house voltage, and changes in ambient temperature and humidity, to name a few.pikov22 wrote:HOWEVER, if oxidation builds up between contacts, the resulting high resistance path would eventually become a permanent fault.
What's the deal? Why not just unplug and plug it in a few times as PR suggested? May not fix it, but what could it hurt?

Re: Troubleshooting
I have see cases where the pins inside of the plugs on the side of the blower push back into the plastic housing. It would be obvious if you look at the pins inside of the plug.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!
