DIY small humidifier solution

Post by HoustonMedic08 » Tue Apr 07, 2015 9:13 pm

I started CPAP very recently, and it's definitely been good for me. I can't imagine life without it, honestly. I've found I really benefit from humidification, and I'm pondering a lightweight/low-space travel/camping setup. My job often takes me to fairly austere places where I don't have the benefit of toting a lot of luggage and I may or may not have any power availability. I'm exploring some kind of small portable case setup using just the CPAP part of my PR System One Series 60 along with a battery (fortunately, lots of good info on that here) and then I've been thinking about ways to do some kind of super small humidifier setup. Water bottles are ubiquitous and I've seen some low-powered humidifiers that fit on bottle caps. My thought is to combine a "T" fitting with one of these or create some kind of passover adapter for a water bottle and my hose to create a portable humidifier that doesn't take up much space.

Has anyone had any experience with anything like this or have any helpful advice?

Or... what about just putting a wide bowl of water behind the intake?

Did you know that you can still use water in the water chamber but turn off the humidifier (and heated hose if you are using one) so that you have passover humidification that way?
Obviously the big down side to camping with the humidifier on is the power drain but if you are just wanting passover humidification you already have a great container at your fingertips.
It's easy to turn the power to the humidifier off so it won't heat the water and if you use a heated hose it can also be powered off or you could just use a regular hose.

I'll never forget, lo those many years ago, when we decided to boil a bucket of water on the campfire, then put it in the tent to warm things up. By about 2:00 am, we had to get up and huddle around the fire till morning because the tent was so clammy it was nearly frozen. I would think just putting a bucket of water in your tent would add a bunch of humidity.

Using a passover humidifier in series with the built-in humidifier of your cpap machine will negate the effects of the heating of the humidifier and heated hose.

So, you can follow Pugsy's suggestion of turning off the heated humidifier and the heated hose and just use you current humidifier chamber as a passover humidifier.

Or, you can get an external humidifier such as just the water chamber of the HC150 external heated humidifier ($15 at our hosts) https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... fiers.html,
Or you can get a more effective passover humidifier like the Respironics external Passover humidifier ($66 at our hosts) https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... -hose.html.

Other solutions likely exist including building your own as in your original post.

BTW, here is a use for a cpap machine not intended by the manufacturer
http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/22974/ ... roofer-box
it does show the HC150 humidifier.

Guys. I need your help with my problem. My humidifier is leaking. Water is dripping at the base of my humidifier. Please share your solutions. I would be grateful.

PS. If I decide to buy a new one, how about these humidifier choices.

Suggest you start a new thread asking for help so it will catch attention. Be sure to include your make and model of machine because the machines are built differently and solutions will vary depending on the machine. Also indicate if you mean the humidifier unit or the water tank inside. Good luck.

The Z1 portable CPAP machine has a disposable inline humidifier that gets the moisture from your exhaled breath. They're $5.95 each. The Z1 advocate here claims he gets a week or two out of it. Search on "Z1 CPAP HME humidifier". I'm not sure how close they need to be to the mask to work effectively.

I'm planning to buy one and hack up the hose to an old ResMed AirFit P10 mask to get it close to the mask. Between that and water in the humidifier tank, I'm hoping I can get by on the boat on a 35 amp-hour AGM battery for a few nights with the power-hungry heated hose and humidifier disabled.
