CPAP Travel to India - Water?

Post by RipSnorter » Sat May 23, 2015 3:41 pm

Hi All,

I really prefer to use Distilled water in my humidification chamber - I find that even boiled or filtered water tends to leave more of a residue in the chamber where I live.

I am about to travel to india for a couple of weeks for work. I have heard some real nightmare stories about tap and even some "bottled" water over there and I am apprehensive about relying on the local water supply.

I am wondering if I should take a couple of litres of my own distilled water in my checked luggage? Does anyone else find that most of the decent hotels provide trustworthy water for the cap machine?

for what it's worth, boiling *increases* the amount of residue, boiling can kill most of the pathogens in water, but by boiling it, you're removing part of the pure water as steam, leaving more concentrated non-water in the pan.

distilling is capturing the part that boils off, and condensing it back into liquid.

Just buy Aquafina from any grocery store/supermarket in India. It is sterile and has very low TDS (<25). You will be fine.

Or, if you must travel to areas you can't buy distilled water (but they can do nuke reactors? ) you should be able to afford a new tank when you return. Or clean the old one with white vinegar. Jim

None of them provide water for CPAP machines. The ones I stay in will provide drinking water with the seal on the bottle unbroken.

Please check the weather. It's hot and humid now. You may not need the humidifier.

Take it anyway. You might stay where it's air conditioned.
You might need humidity. It would really suck to not have choices.

Over the years, I have traveled in many countries, unfortunately, not in India. It has been my experience that many hotels provide bottled water, and in most countries, it is available in stores. When I was in Russia, bottled water anywhere was safe for drinking and brushing your teeth, and we were warned not to use tap water for those purposes. I can't see how using whatever bottled water is available in India would hurt you or the humidifier... I suggest to be prepared to clean it well or pick up a new humidifier once you get home, or as the other posters have suggested, don't use it while there but take it along in case you find you really need it.

Thanks everyone. It looks like bottled water will be the go. I have bought the side attach, went for the airiness so it can run without the humidification tank, so i should be all set to go.
