best pillow for side sleeper

Post by Peter62 » Tue May 17, 2011 12:19 pm

This forum is great. I already got some answers. Thanx
I am a side sleeper using nasal pillow mask. My neck is killing me. Any suggestion for the right pillow?
Thanx.

You are probably going to get lots of ideas as this same question has been asked many times and it all comes down to personal choice.

This is the one I use. It comes in a slightly smaller size.
http://www.pur-sleep.com/products/prodD ... rch=&page=

A bit of my history may help. I have bad, bad arthritis in my neck. So bad I have a metal rod in spine for stability and have had vertebrae removed and donor bone implant. With this rod I have pretty severe head movement limitations. Can't tip a soda can up to drink it because can't tilt head back far enough.. that sort of thing.

Over the years even before cpap have tried all sorts of pillows. The wonder foam ones with cradle for neck were okay but seemed to still put my neck in a bind. Too much "forward" tilt. Lots of neck related headaches.

This buckwheat pillow works best for me. Allows me to sleep on side and even with face pushed into the pillow somewhat.
I use the Swift FX nasal pillow mask now and before it, the Swift LT. Big pillows hurt my neck, smaller profile pillows don't. Of course your needs may be different.

There is a less expensive buckwheat pillow made by Sobakowa. It probably would work just fine also. I happened to be a part of a trial with the Regensis pillow and got it for shipping costs only.

You need to think of your neck needs first as you would do even without cpap equipment getting in the way, then consider how you might need to modify things to allow for the mask placement. A good memory foam pillow with head cradle and the side cut out for mask placement might also work for you. It all depends on how much pillow profile works best for your neck. Might need small profile (height) or more. This is a highly individual thing and may take some trial and error on your part to figure what works best for your neck.

Well, after debating for almost a week about ordering the Contour CPAP Pillow or the CPAPMax, I went on Ebay and ordered a buckwheat pillow. I read some good reviews by other list members here and after considering everything, I decided on the buckwheat.

I ordered from a company called:

http://www.beans72.com/beans72/0-Pillows2.htm

but bought via Ebay. The price was the same and I have been Ebaying for over 10 years with great results. If, by some chance I don't like the pillow, my husband will inherit it. He can sleep on anything.

Will give feedback when I get the pillow. It is coming from Brownsville, TX and I live in Houston so it shouldn't take long to get here.

I have been thinking about this question for a while and have not yet made a decision on what pillow to buy. I saw an article at http://www.pillowanswers.com/cpap-pillo ... -sleepers/ that said that the "CPAPfit CPAP Pillow–Cool" is very good. Has anyone here tried it, and what did they think of it?

I used his original Regenisis buckwheat hull pillow for years before he came out with this new improved version that I am using now.

Bed pillow preferences are going to be like mask preferences...not all bed pillows will work well for all people and it's just something that we as individuals have to sort out on our own.
I hit my 6 year anniversary on cpap this week...and the bulk of that time has been using a buckwheat hull pillow.
My neck is kinda a mess with the old arthritis stuff and I would use this pillow even if I didn't use cpap.

Will everyone love it? Of course not but more people like/love it than don't.

Have you tried a cervical neck brace? I am guessing Pugsy can tell us who can not use such a thing.

Who was this question directed at?
Peter62? This thread was started by him in 2011. Doubt he will be around to answer your question and Marlawn who resurrected the thread doesn't mention neck pain issues.

I actually won't comment at all on neck braces other than anyone having neck pain that is severe or persists needs to be evaluated by a doctor.
If common sense remedies don't relieve cervical spine pain...see a doctor if the pain persists, is severe or there is any numbness in the extremities. I don't mess around with the cervical spine until potentially serious issues have been ruled out by a physician.

I am glad this thread was resurrected. I am having really bad neck pain. I thought I might be sleeping wierd due to trying not to pull the mask off while I sleep. I was thinking I needed some kind of articulating arm for hanging the hose. Is there anything like that you good people recommend? So it sounds like I also may be knocking it off with the pillow because I do much prefer sleeping on my side.

I should say this is crick in the neck pain that goes away after some days but its happened twice now in past couple weeks.

If I sleep on my back it doesn't seem to happen but I don't rest near as well on my back and it's much harder for me to fall asleep on my back.

I have used a CPAPfit (buckwheat) pillow for about 2 weeks now and I love it. Once you set it to your needs, it stays there and you don't sink down in it. I'm a side sleeper too and this pillow can be sculptured to provide support and/or clearance needed for this position. I've found that I turn less during the night while getting more continuous sleep hours. I have a CPAP dog-bone style pillow as well and I find the buckwheat to be cooler and provide more support. Additionally, this pillow fits normal pillow cases.

My wife, who is not a hosehead, tried it out and loved it too. I wound up buying one for her.

My 2 cents worth.

Ok I ordered a CPAPFIT pillow today. I am worried it will be too firm. Time will tell I guess.

I also ordered the cpap travel buddy too since I have to do that more than I prefer lately. Nobody mentioned an articulating arm so I guess that must be overkill.

Hi Pugsy: based on what you said, I ordered the CPAPfit pillow using a link on the article I mentioned below. I'll tell you how I like it when I get it.

I got my cpap fit pillow. I removed a gallon of stuffing. It still seems really too firm for my preference. Has anyone added foam or something else to increase the softness or comfort? If so, where did you get your stuffing?
