OT: Psyillium Husk for Cholesterol
Doctor says statins. I say no statins.
A lady recommended 8 ounces of water with psyllium before each meal. Said this will reduce cholesterol naturally.
What do you think? Should I try psyllium? Cheap and no side effects?

I take a psyllium and flax seed mixture in 8 oz of water every morning and my overall cholesterol is 108.
Plus it keeps you regular!

Re: OT: Psyillium Husk for Cholesterol
Guess what lowered my cholesterol? Actually, it lowered my total cholesterol a little, lowered my triglycerides a lot (a good thing) and raised my HDL a lot (a very good thing):
Eating lots of saturated fats: butter, coconut oil, olive oil, egg yolks, and fatty cuts of meat. Honest truth.
See this week's Time Magazine cover:
P.S. Butter tastes WAAAAY better than psyillium husks!

Just be aware that it is also a laxative. What do you think? Should I try psyllium? Cheap and no side effects?
Far better to eat wisely as Janknitz suggests.

You will find Dr's on both sides one arguing for very low chlosterol values then others saying that
a low total chlosterol number is worthless. To make it even more confusing LDL ( good chlosterol )
can be harmful on benign depending on the particle size. In general if your triglycerides are less than
twice what your HDL is then your LDL will be the large fluffy non harmful type. To realy look at this
particle size you need a PAP chlosterol test. But just for fun you may want to look at the graph in this
study.

Fat and its effect on us depends more on its molecular density, NOT on its source.
Not all vegetable fats are healthy, not all animal fats are unhealthy.
What is more, animal fats carry nutrients for which we eat meat;
and the flavor can make healthy but unappealing foods irresistible.
Anyhoo, back to psyllium husk: Taking some with water at every meal is likely
to insure one gets enough exercise--running to the potty!

The biggest disadvantage of psyllium is abdominal bloating and GAS. Physillium is the basis of Metamucil. The "Fiber One" bars are mostly psyllium. I tried eating them for snack while on diet. Couldn't tolderate the painful bloating and GAS.

Don't let this scare you Samaniego. For years, with breakfast, I have eaten 1/3 cup Kellogg Bran Buds every morning. It contains the equivalent of two servings of Metamucil. When I travel and do not have access to Bran Buds, I take two envelopes of Metamucil Orange Smooth every day. There is no "running to the potty". To the contrary, I am perfectly regular each morning. It's so nice to go out the door every morning knowing you are not carrying a lot of waste materials around all day!chunkyfrog wrote: Anyhoo, back to psyllium husk: Taking some with water at every meal is likely

Maybe there is something else in the Fiber One bars that bother you or maybe your system is sensitive to fiber. I have never had any bloating or gas from psyllium. In fact, by having a good evacuation every morning, I would think it works to prevent bloating the rest of the day.VikingGnome wrote:The biggest disadvantage of psyllium is abdominal bloating and GAS. Yes! Regular is the word. A pleasant, predictable evacuation every morning.spmccord wrote: Plus it keeps you regular!
In addition to helping with lipid levels, it moves toxins in waste through within 24 hours leaving the toxins less time to do damage. It also slows and limits the rise of blood sugar levels which can help everyone, not just diabetics.

Cowfish, Were you too shy to mention this advantage of psyllium fiber? - https://tinyurl.com/ltkegpl

Mine responded well with multi-prong approach: psyllium after breakfast, 1 tsp cinnamon in oatmeal, at least 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise at least 3 times per week, lots of water.
EDIT: forgot I also take 4,000 mg Red Yeast Rice every night, too. My doc says cholesterol produced at night so dosing before sleep works best.

Typo I think, LDLs should be Low, HDLs Higher and particle sizes large and less dense good.
.. Just remember the first letters. Triglycerides as low as can manage.
Re: OT: Psyillium Husk for Cholesterol
You are right I intended to say LDL our bad cholesterol may not be bad after it
depends on the particle size.
depends on the particle size.

Re: OT: Psyillium Husk for Cholesterol
Yes it is a laxative, but a fairly mild one. The husks are oil absorbing in the digestive system and can also strip out much of the beneficial food based nutritional oil your body requires. You have to be careful not to overdo the husks or you will be missing some crucial components your body needs I took them for a year (long ago) with no big noticeable benefits other than excellent bowel movements

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: OT: Psyillium Husk for Cholesterol
I tried these three times per day before each meal. I don't like this so I switched to breakfast only - is good this way.Samaniego wrote:Doctor says statins. I say no statins.

Re: OT: Psyillium Husk for Cholesterol
This is not a problem. My wife cooks like we did in home country - lots of these foods at every meal.Guess what lowered my cholesterol? Actually, it lowered my total cholesterol a little, lowered my triglycerides a lot (a good thing) and raised my HDL a lot (a very good thing):
Eating lots of saturated fats: butter, coconut oil, olive oil, egg yolks, and fatty cuts of meat. Honest truth.
One problem was my country likes many sweets. Doctor say bad, so we change this at home - desserts only for special occasions.
My wife cooks everything. Every Saturday morning she goes to farmers market by the Botanic Garden. Lots of meats from pasture, fresh eggs, vegetables, seafood.
