Please supply your mask fixed-leak rate data - for web page)

Post by dsm » Sun May 14, 2006 4:03 pm

Following some questions that cropped up in another thread, I am going to create a publicly accessible web page that lists the published 'fixed-leak' rates of each brand and model of mask.

In order to do this quickly I am asking all volunteers who are willing to look into the data that came with their mask and to post a summary of the fixed-leak rate table.

This table is usually published as a graph and usually comes in a small booklet (perhaps is on CD as well).

What I would like volunteers to do is to add a post like this

Mask Brand = Xyz
Mask Model = SuperAirFlow
Mask Type = (nose, nasal pillows, full/face)
CMS vs Leak Rate Table

CMS Leak Rate (lpm)
=== ==========
10.0 12
10.5 13
11.0 15
11.5 17
12.0 19
12.5 22
13.0 25
13.5 29
14.0 33
14.5 40
15.0 45
15.5 49
16.0 54

If we initially cover the ranges of 10-16 I think we will have most
people covered. If you have the time & are willing to go from 6 CMS to 20 CMS that would be even better.

As mentioned this is time consuming & I am happy to do as much of it as I can including creating the web page but need your help in gathering this data.

When I create the web page it will be in the form of a table (like a spread sheet) so that at the top row will be the CMS numbers then each subsequent row will be a mask set in Brand alphabetical order showing its leak rate for each cms column. This will make it easy to compare one to another.

Cheers

These rates are as close as I can get, the INFO isn't laid out in .5 CM & skips every other number. My leak rate at 15.5 is in the ball park.

I'm in the market for another ffm, and given my high rate - 14/4 - I know that I will have a hard time finding one that doesn't leak.

And thanks to all of you who post in this thread.

One question I have & may be able to answer in a day or so, is if different sized masks of the same brand and model, will have different fixed-leak chart data ?

One mask that comes to mind is of course the very popular Resmed Ultra Mirage F/F mask range.

I am wondering (but don't know yet) if the small shallow mask model is going to have a lower leak rate that the large - normal (non shallow) model.

Any takers on this Q ?

Tks

Doug,

I don't think so. The chart that I took these figures from didn't specify anything about that type of thing.....pretty generic.

Leak rates

DSM-

Thanks so much. Does this mean with a Breeze set at 13 cm using a Resmed Spirit that if my LCD tells me that I had a leak of .26 l/s that I was almost leak free?

Thanks to everybody.

Bob

I have to confess that I can't say for sure. The part I don't recall is what the machine data will say for a given mask setting at a given cms that has no accidental leaks.

I am hoping the machine says 0 lpm leak if the machine is correctly set for the mask. Some many months back I used a Spirit & an Elite & was monitoring this info nightly & to the best of my recollection the machine showed approx 0 lpm if all was set up ok.

The Remstar data will naturally be different because they don't have settings for masks. They rely on internal algorithms to calculate if they think there is a fixed-leak vs accidental leak. On most Bipap models (except the Bipap AUTO) that data is calculated by the AUTO-TRAK software.

Could you put a small paragraph on your final web site explaining
what is considered a bad leak and the conversion between leaks
measured in Liters/Second versus Liters/minute. There is a lot of
confusion among folks as to normal mask leaks (the designed
exhaust vents), and bad mask leaks from a poor seal. Thanks.

Meister,

Excellent suggestion. In fact I am happy to add whatever helps people understand this area better.

Any suggestions as we go forward, will be welcome.
