I call foul! You changed the percent ranges since the last poll! I can't vote with such large ranges. I want to vote for 20-30%

And now the real answer.......DON'T KNOW!

My average typically is about 25% (range from low teens to 40)

My best AHIs seem to be when it's in the low 20's. (but not always)

Couldn't figure out what to put as a selection in your poll based on what I know about my stats.....so I didn't mark anything.

Den,

I didn't put "Don't Know" on because I would like to know everyones perception of which is best. I don't think any of us really know for sure.

The average person spends 20% of their time in REM sleep. The variable breathing measure how much time we are in REM and awake. If you are an average person then you want to have an percentage of 20. Meaning you spend 20% of your time in REM sleep and you are alseep as soon as you turn on your machine. That is if you are average whatever average is!

Thank you for that fact, Liz.

The variable breathing number is only an indirect measurement of REM; it records the time spent in irregular breathing compared to your slow, steady, rhythmic breathing typical of deep sleep. However, the machine can record other phenomena associated with irregular breathing that are not exclusive to REM.

For myself, I have an average of 27% over the past 30 days.

30 + , I used to worry about it being too high, but the way I feel, I've decided it's OK! Jim

Normal?

Post by Jerry69 » Fri Mar 17, 2006 7:59 pm

Mine averages 17.6% from November 27, 2005 , per MyEncore. I don't know what that means. Is it good or bad? One post said 20% was 'normal'. I HATE to be NORMAL.

Here is my MyEncore report from last night:

Image

See, the Variable Breathing is 20% and the AHI is a very low 0.3, not unusual. I used the ComfortGel mask. Confession: I drank a LOT of alcohol last night. Contrary to opinion, alcohol does not raise my AHI?

VARIABLE BREATHING, according to the Respironics patent, occurs when:
1. The patient is awake
2. The patient is in REM sleep
3. The patient is in distress

If I understand this correctly, that would mean comparing your variable breathing percentage to someone else's isn't going to tell you much. It depends on which of those 3 causes (and how much from each cause) is contributing to your variable breathing figure. If you could know for a fact that your variable breathing rate was primarily the result of REM sleep (not distress, or laying awake), that would be good. On the other hand, if you could know for a fact that your variable breathing rate is primarily the result of being awake or in distress (and not in REM sleep) that would be bad.
Here is a previous post by derek, the author of the MyEncore software:
derek wrote:Sounds like you are using MyEncore - because those are the exact words I use on the graph.

From the Respironics Patent:
"... The Auto-CPAP... relies on the ability to trend the steady rhythmic breath patterns associated with certain stages of sleep. When a patient is awake, in REM sleep, or in distress, breathing breathing tends to be more erratic, and the Auto-CPAP trending becomes unstable. It is, therefore, important to interrupt the Auto-CPAP if the patient's breathing becomes too variable...."
Once the APAP has decided you are in "variable breathing", the actions it takes are quite complex (according to this patent).

I have no idea what a good value is. I average around 33% according to MyEncore.

I simply take the variable breathing as a measure of how "peaceful" your night was. In other words its a measure of how much of the night you were not having slow steady breaths,

derek

Browser,
Thanks for that bump. I don't think I had seen that explanation for VB before. (Or if I had, I was too out of it to remember) That helps me understand it much better.
