420e Specification Correction

Post by SWS » Sat Jan 08, 2005 1:20 am

Well, I should REALLY have known better then to try and convey a 420e spec in a past post from memory. Heheh! Memory is something that we apneics are not always good at, and I really conveyed a 420e spec wrong!

In a past post I erroneously said that the 420e's central apnea specificity was on the order of eighty-some percent. I just now reviewed the 420e central apnea specs and here they are:

420e Central Apnea Specificity=100%
420e Central Apnea Sensitivity= 62%

Also, below are PB's direct words regarding these CA specs (they used the 418P as the basis for the 420e design and specs regarding sensor and algorithm):

"Goodknight 418P is highly specific and moderately sensitive in detecting central apnea events. The comparatively low sensitivity value results from using the presence of cardiac oscillations in combination with no airflow conditions as a surrogate indicator for central apneas, which are usually indicated by the absence of respiratory effort during manual PSG scoring. Independent published research* has documented that cardiac oscillations on the airflow signal accompany only 60% of all central apnea events. "

It is that 62% sensitivity rating that likely compelled PB to also include an adjustable command-on-apnea parameter----to act as a customizable "safety limit" of sorts for those who need it. PB defaulted that adjustable "command-on-apnea" parameter at exactly 10 cm, whcih is that same statistically magical limit that is hard-coded in the AutoSet Spirit and T family.

My take is still that the 420e is an excellent machine, but i am very sorry for having conveyed a "bad" spec from memory. I should really know better since my memory aint so hot these days!

Well I've got a Spirit if you need an extra SWS. It doesnt like me so I'm replacing it with a 420E. Any takers out there.

Hey, Chris--- since most people don't have a 420e to trade, why not post an asking price for your Spirit so that you can use the proceeds toward your 420e purchase.

BTW, when I said the 420e is an excellent machine.... I really meant the 420e is an EXCELLENT machine!! And you already know it will work well for you and your breathing pattern----which is what counts most.

Good luck!

Are you telling us that you forgot you can't remember SWS? or is it you don't remember that you forget?

LOL! I forgot exactly what I was trying to say... Kind of reminds me of those interactive lyrics to a not-too-popular albeit whimsical song quite a few years ago. It kind of went like this:

First singers: "Do you suffer from long-term memory loss?"
Answering Singers: "I don't remember..."
