Heated Hose Questions

Post by Linda3032 » Wed Feb 08, 2006 11:57 am

I got my Aura last week and love it (deconstructed). But I have rainout - even in passover.

Bought the Aussie Heated Hose and received it yesterday.
Used it for the first time last night with humidity.
Woke up in less than 4 hours with a horrid sore throat. Disconnected and slept the rest of the night without CPAP. Throat feels better this morning.

Today, I bumped my heated humidifier from 1 to 2 - to see if that helps. Hope I don't get rainout again - as I did notice a few drops of moisture in the pillows this morning before I washed it. I was surprised to see them because I did use the heated hose.

Questions:
Has anyone experienced a sore throat from the heated hose?
How do you wash the heated hose? I did carefully rinse it out yesterday before I used it.
Does anyone put an extra insulating cover over the grey cover that comes on the hose?

If I can't use this hose, then I can't use the Aura - and that would break my heart. ....

Hi Linda,

Some people report still getting some moisture in the Aura, even with the heated hose. I notice a few drops of water in the pillows area tubing sometimes, but as long as water isn't spraying me in the face or rolling into my nose, I don't worry about it. I've noticed a bit of water collecting under the cushion of my Activa too, occasionally. I have the heated hose and I keep my F&P HC150 heated humidifier on its lowest setting. The only times I turn the humidifier up considerably are on the rare congested nose occasions that I need to use my Ultra Mirage FF mask for mouth breathing.

Covering the Aura's connector tube and as much of the small tubing as possible might help.

snork1 has written that he uses an extra hose cover around the heated hose itself, even though that's not recommended in the instructions that come with the heated hose. Probably is ok to add if one's bedroom is so cold that the thin cover that comes with the heated hose is just not enough. However, Linda, I'm betting that in the situation you described, it's the nasal part and/or connector tube getting cold, and that those areas need cover.

Washing the heated hose... the instructions say to not get the outside wet. I rarely wash any hose anyway - using distilled water in the humidifier keeps things very clean, imho.

When talking about cleaning any hose, someone (mikemoran I think?) said that he pours in some cleaning solution (vinegar/water, or mild soap/water, whatever) and then connects both ends of a hose together with one of those plastic quick hose connectors, forming a closed circle. Slosh it around inside the circle. Do same thing repeatedly for rinsing.

That method should work well for cleaning the inside of the heated hose - closing the circle. A hula hoop!!

Thanks RG. I do have the small hoses on the Aura insulated - a cut terrycloth headband fits perfectly. We do sleep in a very cold bedroom, so I think I will put a snuggle cover on the heated hose - if I can get it on.

In 3 years, I never had rainout with the NasalAire and standard hose, but then again, it was well insulated and under the covers with me.

That sore throat sure surprised me, however. And it feels fine this afternoon, so I'm positive it was the heated hose.

I'll keep working at this - no way I want to quit using the Aura. ...

Linda, I noticed a strong smell from my heated hose ( which I got yesterday also). I attributed the smell to the glues used in the hose, or outgassing of the plastic tube. It didn't cause me any grief last night though.

The hose sure made the air warm, and so I had to dial back the humidifier.

Regards,
Bill

Linda, if you get a snuggle make sure that when you put the snuggle cover on the end is covered with a slippery plastic bag. This will make it much easier to slide it on.

Hmm! A cold room in Arkansas, you must be up north in the Ozarks. I was stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base, which is in Jacksonville in 1968-1970. Enjoyed it when I was there, except for the summers, a little to hot and humid for me. I really loved the fishing and scenery up at Greers Ferry on the White River below the dam. The people were also very nice!

Heated hose & sore throat

Post by Niteair » Wed Feb 08, 2006 4:12 pm

Hi Linda
I have been using the heated hose for about a year now, and I did experience a sore throat a couple of times when, for whatever reason, possibly a momentary power outage, caused my humidifier to be off. I normally always have my humidifier set to the highest setting of 5 on the remstar APAP, seem to feel better the next day. no sinus issues. I have the small diameter hose covered with flannel material, and very rarely have any sign of rainout. I agree with RG, and do not wash the heated hose, , I do however wash the small hose on the aura , I also only use distilled water in the humidifier, which I refill each night, using the high humidity setting that I do, there is very little water remaining each morning, which I dump out.

Hi all, thanks for all the responses. I did manage to get the "snuggle cover" on the heated hose - it didn't like sliding over the cover already in place, but that slick bag worked pretty good.

Yes, Capt, it does get cold here in SW Arkansas - it's been about 20 degrees on our deck the last 3 nights. Plus, we close our bedroom heater vents. It's hard to break the habit of sleeping in a cold room. Talking about fishing, it's about ready to start that old spring spawn. We still have the bass boat winterized, but it's due to "get out of jail" soon, and I'm chomping at the bit. (I even reorganized the tackle box yesterday )...

RG, I re-read my instructions with my heated hose, and I couldn't find anything about not putting another cover on it. Maybe I have newer directions than the ones you got. Anyway, I did it and hopefully I can turn up the humidity without getting the rainout.

Niteair, it sounds like we have the same machine and mask, so I'm very hopeful that with my new setup, I'll be okay tonight.

I'll post again tomorrow and bring you up to date. Thanks again,
Linda

Questions:
Has anyone experienced a sore throat from the heated hose? Not that I remember, but the smell from the hose on the first night or two was something that really bothered me, even gave me a headache.

Does anyone put an extra insulating cover over the grey cover that comes on the hose?
Yes - my hose touches a pretty cold wall, and I need to insulate it from the wall - the heating turns off at night too.

I find that even with the hose and narrow Aura tube slightly wrapped, I need to isulate the nasal seal itself - it's worth it. I use a "tube bandage" very fine, very soft material.

O.

Well, good news. No more sore throat from the heated hose.

I bumped the humidifier up to 2. I preheated both the hose and the water before going to sleep, and no problems. No rainout either. So I think I'm all set.

Man, I sure love that Aura Headrest. It's so quiet and so comfortable.
