Question about Aura/Headrest mask?
Ok, I am thinking seriously of getting this mask to try as I have heard lots of good things about it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my CC and it fits me great. The problem is I now have permanent marks on my face from the cheek pads and its getting worse. I have tried other things suggested on here but it doesnt keep the mask in place the cheek pads just work great for me. I don't know if I am having a reaction to the silicone or what. I have tried cleaning them with baby shampoo, antibaterial soap, and even resorted to my hypoalergenic face wash stuff as i have very sensitive skin. I don't want to change masks but I just want something that just wont touch my face at this point. I am however going to see if my DME can get me the foam cheek pads to try. I also like the Activa (thanks to Lori ) but don't think I can do with that every night.
My question is are the nasal pillow things on the Aura/Headrest whatever it is called now are they comfortable liek moreso than the swift cause I cant use the Swift cause it hurts my nose sooooo bad I have tried all three sizes and they all hurt and leave sores in my nose. I have even tried a little KY when using them that helps a bit but not enough worth the pain I have every morning. Also, I almost suffocate myself cause of where the exhalation ports are on the Swift. I have woke up twice now kinda lightheaded and feeling like I was suffocating realizing I was sleeping on my stomach with the ports buried in the pillow.
So, anyone have any advice for me? I think I am just at one of those very frustrated with the whole freakin why cant I be normal and not sleep attached to a hose and mask eveyr night points! GRRRR!!! Sometimes I would kill to just be able to lay down and sleep with NOTHING on my face!!

Aura (Headrest) - Love it.
Overall, I am very pleased with my new Aura mask. I'm going to give some history and then tell you why I like my Aura. So skip to the bottom if you want to get right to pros/cons of my experience with the Aura.
Me:
Male, 39, short thick hair, clean shaven, average/athletic build, average size head and nose, for my height (6'2"). Active sleeper, back, sides, tummy. Just diagnosed about 4 months ago after feeling tired for about 25 years (too bad, can't get those years back).
Masks I've tried:
Mask 1.
Comfort Curve (my first mask). It was comfortable, however it leaked when lying on my side; ended up irritating my cheeks after a couple weeks of use. Leaking and irritation prompted me to look for another mask. Nicknamed it the "Leaky Irritator" and it became the first to go into my new mask graveyard (bottom drawer in night stand).
Mask 2.
Ultra Mirage (nasal mask), my second mask. Better for me because it did not leak as much nor irritate my face like the Comfort Curve (renamed the Leaky Irritator). Although better for me, it wasn't what I was hoping for. It constantly leaked when I rolled on my side with side of face on pillow pushing into sides of mask. It kept waking me up to adjust. The headgear was also too large and did not fit well. As an active sleeper, I need something that will let me roll around side to side without leaking. This wasn't working for me.
Mask 3.
Oracle (mouth mask). Big mistake for me, another $100 wasted. Thought I'd try something new, you never know till you try. Felt strange having my mouth slightly opened in an unnatural position. Was constantly having saliva build up when first trying to sleep. BUT, after about 2 hours of sleeping, I woke up with extremely dry mouth. I have a heated humidifier, set to 4. I was told to use the Oracle, only with a humidifer. Even with the humidifier I still ended up having a very dry mouth. Like dry sand. Not comfortable and dry mouth = no rest. Okay, time to spend more money on my next new mask. Time to read what everyone is saying. What works for them? After a lot of time reading, seems that many people are having luck with the Aura. Many say that it seems more geared for a man's head, but has been successful for both men and women. So, being a man, it may just do the trick.
Mask 4.
The Aura (aka Headrest), my forth and current mask. Compared to the others I've tried, LOVE IT! I can roll around side to side, put face into pillow, and no leaks! I used a little KY jelly on the nostrils, as recommended on other posts. I slept through the night, not having to wake up once to make any adjustments. I use an Auto CPAP (min 7 - max 14). With the other masks, when I wake up to check the setting, on average it was around 12. Now, I wake up to see it around 8 or 9. There was one thing I HAD to do to make this mask work for me. I had to use a stocking tied around my head and nosepiece to keep it in place. It's not tight, just enough to keep the nosepiece from drifting away. I've read where many people have made modifications to their Aura, and I may do the same some day. But for now I am using it "out of the box", with the extra nylon stocking to keep the nosepiece in place. I did experience some discomfort in my nostrils at first before falling asleep, but it soon went away. I wake up without any discomfort or irritation. I have sensitive skin, so this was a concern at first. Luckily, it was only temporary (for me).
OVERALL, I am very pleased with my new purchase. The only con was that it left strap marks on my forehead. They went away after 30 min or so. But the mask was so comfortable and allowed me to move/roll around from one side to the other, face in pillow, and did not have any leaks or adjustments to make. So a couple temporary stap marks are not a concern for me. I think that Rested Gal has some good modification suggestions that would be helpful to learn about. The box on the top does not bother me at all, but I think since I am having to use a nylon stocking to hold the nosepiece close to my face, I may make some modifications myself. I need to look at those posts from Rested Gal again.
Oh, I should mention that I am thinking about getting a 10' foot hose and putting some hook above the bed to drape the hose above me. I think this will provide the perfect setup for an active sleeper like me. The 6' hose doesn't give me quite the length I need to move around as much as I do.
I was able to snuggle and spoon with wife with this mask as well. Life is good.

Aura - Exhaust Port - No issues
I forgot to mention that the exhaust port on the Aura is close to the forehead, away from the face. So I am able to sleep on my sides with face in my pillow without any problems. I do not use any special pillow, just a big fluffy goose down pillow.
Aura - Rubberband Trick
Just came across this posting, and will try tonight, instead of using a stocking tied around my head. LOL.

Hey there! Thanks for the reply...I have just had the phone convos from HELL with my sleep doc's office...It was a nightmare I finally gave up and said you know what screw it! Just make me an appointment with my sleep doc and I will deal with things from there and eve that seemed like too much of a hassle for them! Nobody but Apria and American Home Patient take my insurance. AHP is GREAT and i have never had any probs with them b ut they dont carry the foam cheek pads I wanted to try nor do they carry the Aura/Headrest! I called Apria even though I have never uised them before and the lady was GREAT and said she would gladly set me up with an RT so I could try some different masks and maybe the RT could make some reccomendations. I was like ok AWESOME! She said have your sleep doc fax your Rx and a copy of your sleep study and we will call and schedule your appt with the RT. Sounds easy enough right? WRONG! omg that lady at my docs office if I couldl have reached out and touched someone omg GRRRRRR...I just gave up and said I would go back to AHP and deal with them cause they said I COULD get a new mask now and it doesnt seem to be a prob since they have all my info...So now I gotta try and decide on a new mask and I dont have a clue...
I am just having sooo many personal issues with CPAP right now...like dating with CPAP is a nightmare and I have soem issues going back from that about it not really being accepted by my ex too well and I now have fears with that along with some other personal issues and just got soooo frustrated with it all I just broke down on the phone with the horrible lady at my doc's office then my dad called and was like why are you crying over all this its stupid get over it! The sad thing is he is on CPAP too!
Just NOT a good day
Will glady still take advice on new masks though... and hope that my DME carries it... I have the ultra mirage FF, Activa, Swift, and the CC. oh and have tried the is it a comfort classic (its an older mask hated it) and the I guess it was the comfortgel? not sure of the name of the last two...

MissAmethyst - I am SO sorry you're having all this trouble!!
Couple thoughts - call Apria back, since they were so nice, and see if THEY will contact your doctor's office for the needed info. This is done ALL the time, and often they can get a faster response than you can. Sad, but true. Your doctor's office may not want to give info to you, but okay with giving it to the DME. Heaven forbid - a patient with their own information!! If Apria does get the info from them - get Apria to give you a copy, and keep it safe for future needs!
Second option, depending on where your doc's office is in relation to you - go in person and make yourself a royal pain at their front desk - they won't want you upsetting the other patients, and may quickly give you what you need to make you go away. Don't know if that's an option for you, not sure if you're close to their office or not. Worst case - when you do go in for your appointment - demand a copy of your prescription and sleep study and refuse to leave the treatment room until you get it. They want to churn people through there, and you're holding up the next patient should get their attention!
Can't really provide much in the way of mask suggestions, as I use the Ultra Mirage FF mask currently, and hoping to try the Hans Rudolph soon. I have used the Breeze with taping my mouth - but like you, my nose is just TOO tender and even with Ayr gel slathered on, I couldn't get my nose to adjust. So, my personal experience, that mask didn't work for me. YMMV, of course. Lots of people really like it - and I loved the lightness of it and freedom of movement - just couldn't get past the sore nose.
On the dating thing - anyone who can't accept you with CPAP - run far, far away as fast as you can!!! Anyone who cares about you is going to want to see you successfully using the CPAP, so they can have a long, healthy life with you! My husband was a bit nervous at first, but he's sleeping so much better now himself. I didn't really snore, but I must have been disturbing him with my breathing/lack thereof. The noise of the CPAP is also like white noise for him, so that hasn't been an issue. He is so much happier, now that I am more rested and more fun to be around, plus able to help more around the house
I know it seems bleak today - some days are just really rough, I know. Hang in there, smile even though you don't feel like it - it really can help you feel better. Go sing loudly some favorite tunes, watch a favorite video, or whatever makes YOU feel good - it sounds like you really need to take some "Me" time today. I know I'm trying to lose weight - but when I have a really rough day - sometimes I just have to eat some chocolate! If you do, don't feel guilty - just make it something extra special and savor it
Remember - this too shall pass - tomorrow is a new day!

CPAP Prescription, Mask Hell, Dating, Other Opinions?
PRESCRIPTION:
I was fortunate to get my prescription immediately after my sleep study. Nice computer printout with the doctors signature. I faxed it to cpap.com and have been ordering everything from there ever since. Costly, but did not feel like going through the headaches of dealing with some medical office.
MASK HELL
Sounds like we all go through it, trying to find that perfect mask. Unfortunately if we were all made the same then we would all be using the same mask. I'm happy that I have discovered the Aura, Everest, Headrest, or whatever they are calling it today. The rubberband trick is just a convenient way to "tweak" the mask so that it works better. My guess is that the maker of Aura will come out with a new version to make this "tweak" unnecessary. Thanks everyone for the great suggestions, especially about the rubberband trick.
DATING
I dated a lot after I got divorced. I agree that if the person you date can not deal with it, that they are not worth dating. However, I must admit that I would not have liked to have been on CPAP while I was going through my dating years, a bit embarassing. I would probably have been a closet CPAPer. But on the other hand, think of all those tired years wasted away. I just started CPAP, after my second marriage, and after the dating years, and my wife is very acceptable and happy to see me getting a good night's rest.
EVERYONE CHIME IN:
1. Do you like your Aura?
2. Are you Male or Female?
3. Using it "out of box" or modified (like rubberbands)?
4. How do you sleep; back, sides, tummy, active?
I'm so happy I discovered the Aura I can hardly contain myself. I've convinced my brother, also a hosehead, to buy it as well.

MissAmethyst
I am now a very happy user of nasal pillows - but the beginning wasn't too easy.
After about a week on the Breeze, with KY gel - my nose was sore, and the RT suggested I take a 3 night break, to help the soreness heal. That was a super wise suggestion, since that was exactly what my nose needed - and since then I've been using nasal pillows without a break.
I did use KY get for months though (probably 4 or more).
I suggest you try the Aura, but be ready with a replacement, non-pillows mask when you're sore. Take the break (3 nights, not more) and the return to the Aura.
By the way, the I didn't like the Swift.

2. Female
3. Tried it out-of-the-box, tried it modified with rubberbands, and tried rested gal's deconstructed version
4. Active sleeper. (I'm probably in all positions at some time throughout the night.)
I saw all the rave reviews and tried the Aura. I would have loved for it to work for me as it is very unobtrusive (particularly the deconstructed version). But try as I might, I did not have success keeping any version in place, found it to be loud, found it to be prone to rainout, and found it to be more difficult to breathe with than the Breeze.
The bottom line is you have to try it (or any mask) for yourself. My (or anyone else's) review is purely subjective and is pretty worthless as a gauge of how it will work for someone else. Any mask purchase is a gamble and you have to be wiling to risk the loss. (Since I am forever in search of the elusive PERFECT MASK, I continue to gamble!)

Hey you all, Thanks sooo much for the replys. It has still been the day from hell and I am far far from a good mood but life goes on and we all have our good and bad days
I do know that masks are to each his or her own and not all work for everyone. I LOVE my comfortcurve and don't want to have to give it up so I am gonna order the foam cheek pads as soon as I get paid and pray they work. I too, am kinda an active sleeper and sleep on my tummy and sides mainly. I manage just fine with the comfortcurve in doing so (I know I know SHOCK lol)
I had NO trouble getting a Rx and all when this one girl worked at the office I found out today she is no longer there though AHP has it on file and the lady I normally deal with through there is GREAT and just I get whatever I need when I need it. So to all of a sudden them not having what I need and then me trying to get a new RX for a new company it has been a PAIN...I guess in a way with my other docs and stuff I am spoiled and when it comes to this sleep center place I go to for my sleep doc its jsut a pain and I am tired of dealing with it! I don't even like my sleep doc but as far as I knwo its one of the only ones my insurance will take and one of the only ones around here and they have three offices close by in other cities and all the same docs work at all of them! My options are SLIM...Might give my insurance company a call tomm and see if by some chance there is another sleep doc somewhere close by I can try....
As far as the dating thing, as some of you know I have a lot of other medical probs and because of that and the anxiety I have a hard time leaving the house, I am way better now than I used to be but I still dont get out much. I am only 22 (23 on the 13th) add in CPAP and being overweight (and when ya live in a tiny 7 mile wide city with guys who think you should be a perfect little blond haired blue eyed Barbie doll and weigh like 120lb well then it makes for a crappy dating life!
Yeah basically just venting away here sorry I know as I think Karen said...This too, shall pass...is soooo very true jsut one of those down days ya know...
Thanks everyone
P.S. Lori, if you read this, I will be emailing you soon, I havnt forgotten about ya!

Heather,
Yes, the Aura/Headrest is prone to rainout, as Neversleeps said. But it is softer pillow-wise than the Swift's pillows (these are all MY opinons). I think most people do end up having to use something on their nares with whatever nasal pillow mask they start out with or, like Ozij said, have to take a little breather in between concurrent nights until the nares toughen up a bit. I was one of the fortunate ones that didn't have to deconstruct it. And with the XL pillows, it is literally leak-free.
I personally think it is a bit noisy, but it's just a gentle whooshing sound on inhalation, not unlike a lot of other nasal pillow masks. The best part about it is the lack of anything touching the sides of your face that can dislodge it and cause leaks, especially for side sleepers.
The one rule that holds true about every mask is that there is no rule about the perfect mask, as we all have learned. And just because I endorse the Aura/Headrest and think it's the best doesn't mean you won't get three subsequent negative posts saying it was the worst mask they've ever used. Too bad we can't all achieve the same results. Would save us all a lot of wasted expense on trying different masks. I had to pay for mine because even though my DME works with me to order masks they don't carry, this one they couldn't get. But I think it was the best money I'd ever spent on anything CPAP-related to date.
I did get your email and wrote you back. Will write a better one tomorrow, as I explained in the one I did write you. Good luck with your decision making.
